Has nephrite/jadeite color but the jadeite I've worked seems even harder than nephrite. Definitely doesn't work like a soft stone. Serpentine often looks like jade and somewhat softer....Mel

Whatever it is, wonderful. Material to look at. Just a shame about the crack.

deserthounddoes a pocket knife scratch this material? If you break a small piece of it what does the break look like? I am going to say negative on chrysoprase, wrong color. Also, negative on jadeite. You described it as "soft" and jadeite will never be described in this manner.

Marble is easily scratched my a knife.
I see very different colors between the 'prase images you posted and your sample. You are seeing your stone in person. Perhaps the image isn't doing the sample justice.
'prase will have a glassy conchoidal fracture, as will aventurine.
You may have a jade family stone there. Too hard to be serpentine, but the series of stones between jade(s) and serpentine(s) is continuous. That meaning there are dozens [if not hundreds] of stones it could be. Without gemological analysis it may be impossible to say.

Oh yeah, the fact you were able to break it indicates it's not jade. If it were jade, you would have had tremendous difficulty breaking it and most certainly you would have been so impressed you would have mentioned it in your description of the break.

It can be hard to identify some materials. Jade is tough stuff like some have mentioned. Color is great. All kinds of tests that you can go right down to wrapping a hair around it and seeing if it will burn. They say that it has something to do with the coolness of the stone and that Jade stays cool. I have found this all frustrating because I don't want to say something is Jade if it is not. Hope you work something up and post it.

sounds too soft, what about soapstone? We have that here, and its usually light green...very smooth grained stuff but quite soft.
