I'm sure it came out of the Middle fork of the yuba, and i'm really thinking it was by new bullards Bar lake, at the time we were working both middle fork and north fork..but please dont take my memory as a good source...how big a piece you need, i have more than i'll ever use have no problem parting with some...let me know..no charge "what goes around comes around".

I was never able to find any decent stuff around there and was told the main deposit had something built over it. Can't remember if it was a subdivision, strip center or what.

I know Chinese writing stone is kind of misleading. Here is a couple of samples from MN. These were laying in my garage and it was zero in there this morning. I tried to wet them and it froze to the rock and didn't inhance the writing. Go figure.

It is porphery if I remember right. In China they have a similar stone called chrysanthemum and the light parts are in a flower shape. I've seen a very similar material from Zzzzx Road that looks like the Auburn stuff but the patterns are much smaller. Roy that runs the Vista show had it at Stoddard Wells show one year and said it is North of the I-15 up Zzzzx Rd. I heard the Auburn material (huge boulders were dug up when they were building roads up there and they let people haul it away to get rid of it. Auburn is at the top of the "Gold Country" of 49'er fame for the non-Californians.

Yeah, interesting Vegasjames, I knew I had seen some somewhere when out desert collecting and have been racking my brain trying to remember where. It may well have been in the Searchlight area as we made a trip all over that region one time. Been like a zillion years though so it may have been elsewhere too. Think I hunted the California locale with my dad when I was a kid too on a deer hunting trip, but have no idea where that was. Dang ole memory anyway....Mel

The guy that told me about it (Vista Club Ray or Roy Pierce) said you exit Zzzzx Rd and turn left. Can't remember how far back but he said you see it along the road. I'll ask him again at Stoddard Wells show. He is always there.

I realize that this post is fairly old, just over 3 years, but I'm hoping that someone may still know the way to the Chinese Writing rock in Auburn. I live not far away, and have tried looking a couple times with no luck. Yes, I just joined the forum, and yes, this is my first post. Also yes, it's only my word that I'm a recreational rock hunter (and geologist), not in it commercially. I found more of this stone further up Hwy 80, past Yuba Pass, but the matrix wasn't as dark. A fun find, but not quite up to par compared to the Auburn material. There's a small boulder in front of the Geology Dept. at Sacramento State that came from when they were building a housing development, beautiful stuff.

Welcome, we always need expertise and cooperative attitudes here. It may be that stomping the ground will be the way to find it.
