I found this in the Badlands on private land (I had the landowners permission)I posted it on facebook fossil page and was told it was Coprolite I was so excited when I found it I thought for sure it was Coprolite it was just lying on the side of the hill. and no I did not smell it like someone once told me on here to do LOL. (but my son did when I told him what it was) LOL It's heavy not light like the other piece I have.

If it looks like a turd, and it smells like a turd ---- All kidding aside, soak it overnight in white vinegar and then for a few hours in water. Hit it with a scrub brush and get rid of the white outer coating. Then oil it with mineral oil and lay it on the floor. You can blame it on the dog.

You all may be right about these things, but as a zoologist (specialty was reptiles and as a govt biologist, I worked with a lot of "doodoo" not all of which was reptilian, I'm tempted to point out that there are more things that look like scats/feces or coprolites than are actually from that origin. These things could just be calcified concretions. True Mesozoic coprolites are often colorful, variegated, in larger masses, and seldom have the shape of "txxrds". The nice or not side of amateur rock hounding is that we get to have opinions, that often can not or will not be totally tested and this may be a case where its fun to label them as coprolites and hurts no one if we are wrong. Then again, I may be wrong. Tom

Tom, I can't speak for Tammy's example, but mine came from a well known dealer in fossils. I've bought from him many times and have never been burned with a fake.

Used to pull this thing out in my hand where only the top of the prescription bottle was showing and ask the waitress if she wanted to see my stool sample. Interesting reactions to say the least. One gal asked me if it was painful to pass. Another almost kicked my yas

I'm not talking about fakes, just appearances not being what folks think. I'm not into casting asparagus, just being that scientist that was trained to ask how can this be tested (falsified). My point was, "I worked with the govt and and I know shxxt from Shinola". Cheers, everyone. tom

Tom I don't have the means or money to test it, I am an amateur rock hound and I would not want to ruin it.(I don't plan on it leaving my possession anyways) It is a nice piece weather it's coprolite or not. for all I know it could be Iron oxide or something like that.(I like odd stuff) and I was going by the pro's advise of what it is, I did find it where dinosaurs had roamed. And from looking at it it could be Coprolite, I get what you are saying without testing how do you know for sure. I guess I will have to smell it. LOL.

A coprolite could be a lot of things (anything derived from a fecal product), but most coprolite material is colorful, often agatized, quite varied in colors, and not necessarily a glob of whitish material (that would be quite reminiscence of a fecal deposit of a modern day reptile I.E. a glob of uric acid, an insoluble whitish product). I'm suspect that this specimen is largely calcified material (will respond to acid), soft, and likely to be a solution product, and not a real fossil of biological origin. But then again, I'm looking at a photograph. My only point, and its a cautious one, is that things are not always what they appear to be. I'd be interested to see what happens to this specimen if you place a drop of acid on it. Being a calcium product is not a lethal characteristic, but it would indicate that it could have formed in a a soluble replacement process in any space and not necessarily as a replacement of a fecal remnant.
