Will oxalic acid eat stainless steel? I'm getting some dirty quartz next week. Thought that after I pressure wash them, I'd put them in a stainless pot on a turkey fryer to keep it warm.

From my own experiences, oxalic will frost & discolor stainless, but I don't think it will eat holes in it.

I'd suggest using something non-reactive, like glass or acid safe plastic. wear chemical glasses and gloves and be in a well ventilated area. If you're going to dilute it, remember add acid to water, never the reverse.

crock pot will be too small - anyway my wife won't let me use it Hard to keep plastic or glass warm. I'll be soaking on my deck so ventilation won't be a problem. So it looks like I'll be using my old brew pot - 3-4 gallon size. I'll be getting maybe 60-80 lbs of crystals next week. If I like what I get, I'll be getting 700-900 lbs more - need a high volume soaker Thanks, Lee #1

Lee I use a plastic tote with Iron Out.. mix it up and cover the tote with the lid and letit sit..About 12 hours check them and give the tote a shake to remix it (The Iron Out will settle ).let them sit overnight, if they look good, Give them a good rinse with a pressure hose and they will shine... Gotta love yard sales. I use yard sale crock pots & roasters. Keeps me out of trouble with the wife. With a little luck you may find a turkey roaster in a yard sale. For crock pots and roasters, use those with a removable ceramic insert. Set them at the warm setting. They don't have to be boiling hot to do the job.

I have dissolved the bottom out of a cheap stainless steal pan with Iron Out. Not too much nickel in cheap stainless, or the stainless was only a plate, and the acid attached the metal through a scratch.
If you can get a hold of one, you need a 45 gallon barrel, many of which are made out of HDPE plastic. Many companies ship chemicals in them and will sell the empty barrels for as low as $5 or $10 to get rid of them.
I get mine from our local water treatment plant who receives chemicals in them.
Darryl.

yeah, but how do you heat the solution and keep it warm when using plastic? I don't live in SoCal. I got plastic barrels.

but you have SUN down there I've been to LA before and I've SEEN it. I changed my plan. Heat the water on the turkey fryer and dump it in the plastic barrel...at least I'll get a warm start. I've read that oxalic acid works faster warm. Lee #1

I use a large glass coffee pot on a hot plate at the lowest setting. I think stainless won't last long with oxalic acid and the nickel and whatever else released as the pan corrodes may discolor your crystals.

I'm going to do 10's of pounds at a time. I'll just use the stainless to reheat the solution, so it will be in the pot for 15 minutes or so, and the pot gets rinsed when emptied.

I AM not pleased with the crystals I got from Jim Coleman. Was supposed to be 30-40 lbs of dirty crystals per 1/2 bushel...after I power washed the 2 1/2 bushel I bought, I ended up with 35 lbs of what looks like quartz. I did let them know what I thought of them. Pictures will be coming of before and afters

OK, the web site said 30-40 lbs of crystals and dirt. The picture on the web site showed a half bushel of dirty crystals. I set my expectations too high? I was so ticked off, I didn't take any "before" pics. They are soaking in the acid for the second time today. Maybe if the weather stays halfway decent, I'll be able to take some "after" pics tomorrow or the day after. I might have to start catering to the metaphysical crowd to get my money out of these.

I know you are anxious to see that "after" pics so I said "the heck with the weather" and took a couple. The first pic is of the "mostly" clean crystals - the second of what I have left to clean. Enjoy! Sorry about that Had to do it. Lee #1
