Did it have any Play of color when you first got it? it could just be a opal replacement with no POC in the matrix. I have many of them in wood, basalt etc...

What i dont understand is I have never seen any treatment put on a opal to bring out color unless it had POC to begin with. What is the treatment? It looks like he placed them in water like some Royal Peacock opal or VV. Check out this vid on Wood opal. Some has POC and it needs to be kept in water to see it and to prevent it from crazing. Most wood found is going to have nothing for color except a very few.

Here I have 3 opal in Basalt. All have POC to begin with but one of the three I have treated with opticon to prevent it from dislodging or cracking. It doesnt bring out the colors that were not there in the first place, if this helps some.

Could you possibly give me some name to this opal? I am interested in learning more of it and how they treat it to bring up the color. No the Black bay is in Volcanic basalt and the Peacock is in wood or wood replacements. POC in opal is considered precious, and common opal or no colors non precious. Thanks for showing me your material, appreciated.
A mineral oil is any of various colorless, odorless, light mixtures of higher alkanes from a non-vegetable (mineral) source, particularly a distillate of petroleum.[1] The name mineral oil by itself is imprecise, having been used to label many specific oils over the past few centuries. Other names, similarly imprecise, include white oil, liquid paraffin, pariffinum liquidum, and liquid petroleum. Baby oil is a perfumed mineral oil. Most often, mineral oil is a liquid by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum-based products from crude oil. A mineral oil in this sense is a transparent, colorless oil composed mainly of alkanes [2] and cyclic paraffins, related to petroleum jelly (also known as "white petrolatum"). It has a density of around 0.8 g/cm3.[3] Mineral oil is a substance of relatively low value, and it is produced in very large quantities. Mineral oil is available in light and heavy grades, and can often be found in drug stores.

I had thought the same GK. This is a opal wood replacement similar to John's stuff,a kind of treatment maybe a mineral oil brings the color out from what I understand they tell me in a PM. This would be the main reason I was asking if it was similar to VV when placed into water. Keep you posted.
