So recently I was house and dog-sitting for a friend and his property used to belong to a couple of rockhounds. I'm assuming they took all the really good stuff with them when they moved but there were still plenty of stuff left strewn around the property! I collected all the rocks that looked interesting and took pics. Now I can obviously tell a piece of petrified wood from a stick but other than that I'm still a clueless beginner, so ID is appreciated!! My friend doesn't really care for the stuff so I'm sure he'd be willing to sell it. I'll start with a few pics and add more in replies. 1. - Big chunk of quartz crystals. You can see a tennis ball in the background for size. It's a huge chunk and quite pretty (if dirty). Close-up of the crystals. 2. McDermitt area petrified wood. Interesting shape. 3. Would this be a geode? Thunderegg. It's dirty but would clean up nicely, I think. 4. Another petrified wood? Opalized wood 5. Um, don't know. Agate? This is wet. More coming!

Alright, next set of pics, lol. 6. Petrified wood? Opalized wood. Yes, same pics as #4, oops. 7. A huge, but otherwise unimpressive thunderegg. 8. Wood? 9. Petrified wood 10. Is this an agate? It's a big nugget, very translucent but no banding? Montana moss agate Backlit by the sun 11.Maybe Chapinite? This puppy was used as a border rock. It's very big and has a cut face (not polished, I put water on it). Close-up of the cut.

#4&6 are opalized wood. Probably from Oregon.
#11 may be Chapinite.

LOL, that's ok. I just posted the wrong rock on another forum. Had to do a quick edit before I heard about it from the members.

I'd say fossilman and Don are spot on. I think 5 is some type of agate, 18 looks like a geode. Lots of petrified wood probably most of it has lots of fractures and better as yard rock.

It is a thunderegg! This one is a Priday TE.
Ha ha, you funny, Don!! Inside joke...
What the hell, I'll let you all in on it. Almost three years ago, we had a member (to remain nameless) swear that what she had was a fossilized pine cone. She was adamant about it, would not listen to what anyone else had to say, and tempers flared. If this was before your time here, and you want to see what I'm talking about, here's the link . Or you can revisit it for a laugh, if you have already seen it. There was another, um, discussion on a different thread, but you can get the gist from this.
ETA: My bad! Should have given photo credit for the Priday TE to @rocks2dust. Had you clicked on the link to the old thread, you would have seen his entire post. But I guess there are some that would not care to revisit that old thread, to much drama! (Do not say her name aloud, do not even think it!)
Thanks for stopping by, R2D! Have always admired your knowledge of rocks!

It is a thunderegg! This one is a Priday TE. Hey, I don't get chances to read through much of the volume here, so funny that I would find my old "proof" picture posted at the top when driving by just now That was not the first, and not the last, time I've seem various t-eggs misidentified as something else by both collectors and dealers. My IDs agree with some of the others posted: 2 McDermitt area wood 3 Partly filled thunderegg (I think also McDermitt area) 12, 13 Look like they could be partly silicified wood, but could also be tuff 14 Thunderegg core 15 Moqui ball (concretion) 16 perhaps lepidolite 17 Angelwing agate (the reddish bands look like either Eagle Rock or Carey Ranch) 18 Thunderegg (Priday/Richardson's, was one of the older beds, but can't remember which)

With the passage of time, I now find the whole thing pretty humorous, and realize just how wacko that person was. Sometimes, it seems you need to recall the bad in order to appreciate the good!
Agree with you and Roy Clark!

Well, lets just say its prehistoric bone...I have bone from the "Ice Ages" too,so it petrifies at a young age with 1000's of years.......
