Well yesterday the Hammer(his relative)Krystal and I headed to eastern Oregon,to Glass Buttes for Obsidian.... We scored lots of Mahagany,Silver Sheen and black Obsidian. Than went over the fence(drove) to the Cinnabar mine tailings a few miles away and scored some Opalite and a few small pieces of Cinnabar....... It was a great day, full of sunshine and not tourist season yet..LOL www.flickr.com/photos/113624614@N07/sets/72157649919718923/

Wow, looks like a great time! It's just laying strewn around on the ground like that? Very cool.
Kinda like New Yorkers on our Florida beaches... (not so cool)

Nice selection of surface scatter. Did you have to dig, or simply walk around until you stubbed your toe on a good one?
Darryl.

looks like you had a good trip. I've scratched obsidian off my rockhounding list...glass dust in skin, clothes, and pointy shards in my eyes...wasn't worth the trip to the eye DR.

Nice selection of surface scatter. Did you have to dig, or simply walk around until you stubbed your toe on a good one? Darryl. Most were surface finds-Found a few areas where other people were digging in the past,I would pull a few out from those digs... It's like a flowing river of Obsidian all over that place!!!!!!!!!!!

Also stopped in the camping areas right before you get to the digs-that is where they hold the Knapping Rendezvous-found some cool fire Obsidian and smaller Obsidian pieces....

As for fishing, hunting, shedds(dropped antlers) and rock hounding-I keep journals on them all, most go back 15 years or so...............Maps,dates,finds,weather conditions, states, town and counties...Even who I was with...

Nice report Mike. Isn't cinnabar the stuff that will shorten your life by killing you quite rapidly? Seems like I read about Chinese miners that didn't live too long. Jim

Nice report Mike. Isn't cinnabar the stuff that will shorten your life by killing you quite rapidly? Seems like I read about Chinese miners that didn't live too long. Jim As the story goes, back in the old days when they were mining Gold in Eastern Oregon, the miners used this stuff to mix with mercury to separate the gold.. Yes,you don't lick it or play around with it,not nice stuff to play with...Thumbs down! The mines there are old mines from WWII,they mined it for munitions and etc....They are closed down now,but many tons of tailing are still in the area-that's where we went... It's kind of like strip mining, but they just stripped, not replace the dirt and soil..You can see the exposed work from miles away..
