No bead section so I will park here and hope for the best. I have finished some small beads except for one little detail. They need to be drilled. I would prefer to just tie a string around them but since that doesn't look very good I guess drilling is the only way to go. I do not have a clue what size to make the hole so any help along those lines would be appreciated. The coin is a quarter. Jim

I have heard a theory that you drill the hole first and then shape the bead so...I dunno...please let us know what you find out because I have several stones that I did the same thing and now I think they may just not ever become real beads. The problem is that if you do the shape/polish first, then 1) you've got the polish to do all over again and/or 2) you lose a certain percentage of already polished stones to breakage and screw-ups. You probably don't screw up as frequently as I do though but I've definitely had the pain of trying to drill a hole in a finished bead and things go terribly wrong. Better to find out early...

You probably don't screw up as frequently as I do though but I've definitely had the pain of trying to drill a hole in a finished bead and things go terribly wrong. Better to find out early... I have learned that lesson a few times too but I dopped these and the dop was right where I wanted to drill the hole since it was the biggest side. As luck would have it the dops (most) pulled a small bit of stone out of the bead so if I would have drilled anywhere else I would have had another side to work without a dop stick. Which I found out is not a real fun thing to do even though the 3000 soft wheel is pretty easy on the fingers. The shapes were decided for me because they are pieces that came off when I cut the larger cabs off the rough. A friend came over today and I gave her which ever she wanted. She took the rectangle one (the easiest one to drill) and she plans to put it is a cage. I had not thought about that but I now that I have been reminded I think I will put the three smallest (one not showing) in a cage also. No breakage. One tiny down and one tiny to go. On to the Welo opal. That should be comical to watch. Jim

Those are beauties Jim! You're really using every scrap of that malachite.
