I thought I read somewhere that calcite will fade when exposed to light. Is this true? If true how do you treat/display calcite so you don't lose the wonderful color? Hope it is not true. Thanks

I say that sunlight will diminish the color of mostly anything, as I've seen what the sun can do to a few agates left in the sun for a few months. Keep your specimens/minerals in boxes or away from windows, a closet would be nice, or in the corner of a room where the sun don't hit. I don't follow those rules, though.

So displaying them is going to harm them? At least to a degree? That is disappointing. thanks for the reply.

As far as color goes, yes. Ever see a car left to the elements? The sun eats away the paint.

Hi, renny1, I have these two 'massive' pieces of calcite in our rock garden, but, they are not in full sun, along with a massive piece of rose quartz (North Carolina). I asked about the rose quartz fading from exposure to sunlight on the GemAddicts forum, and the response was that it would take longer for it to fade since it is a massive piece. adam gives good advice, and now I'm paranoid and need to go move the calcite and rose quartz preciouses indoors. orange calcite blue calcite rose quartz ETA: renny1, these specimens have been in outdoors for about 3 1/2 years, and have not faded (yet).

Jan is talking about direct sunlight I believe. Displayed in a display case or on a shelf out of direct sunlight is fine.
I have many light sensitive specimens worth thousands of dollars that I display with no concern under florescent or incandescent lighting.

Hey Gingerkid. I luv the Hogg, Chris Painter is a great guy! Yes go there a lot, course I like Don and Don too!
My parents lived in LaGrange for about 10 years. The place has gone down considerable in the last twenty years, a lot of business closed and left town. Of course the whole country seems to have that problem, I see it everywhere in my Rubber Tire Tramp travels! LOL

Small world, orrum! Where did your parents live in LaGrange? garock is from LaGrange. We have lived in LaGrange for the past 15 years, and are from south Georgia - Georgia/Fla line south. I have heard a lot of good things about Chris. Who is Don? We haven't been to the Hogg due to the entry fee to the site. Did you go to the Hogg when Rodney managed the site?

Jan, where is your blue calcite from ? Most will fade in direct sunlight, but the blue from Crestmore quarry in California, and a location I can't remember in France are both color stable in sunlight. I have a couple pieces of the Crestmore blue that have been sitting at the south west corner of my garage since 96. They are still just as blue as when I put them there.

I'm not sure what is the blue calcite's locality, jakesrocks. Will have to check the label that I saved. Thanks for sharing the information on California's Crestmoore quarry blue calcite and French material. Love the wanted poster, 1dave!

Jan, when I get a couple minutes I'll wash off a piece of the Crestmore Quarry blue & get a pic to post here. Found this pic. This is a cube I cut for a friend to make a sphere out of. (middle cube).
