I just got back from Northern Michigan and found quite a few Leland Blue. Could someone please tell me the best way for polishing these. I appreciate all the info I can get. Thanks, Linda

Jimi how do you polish your slag glass when you work it? broseph82 if tumbled, would it be done the same way as regular glass or obsidian? rattlehead works with glass quite a bit and jamesp has tumbled a lot of it. hopefully they will chime in. welcome to the forum lindalouise

Thanks everyone. All of my Blues are small for tumbling, not sure what grit to start out with.

I cut and cab the leland blue so the only pieces that get tumbled are trim saw scraps. Most of the material has gas bubbles so that creates the issue of making sure grit is cleaned out of every little feature between stages. Other than that treat like a batch of obsidian. Pictures of your pieces will help us to help you. The cabs sell great. I have cut a bunch and do not have any left. see link below. Leland blue sample cabsChuck

when you are posting to the thread the toolbar right above the text window has a button for "insert image" seventh button from the right. Enter the URL from your photobucket photo there. when you are logged in you should be able to click the cog or gear icon in the top right corner next to your post to edit or delete it. Chuck

Leland blue is no different from the blue, green, and purple slag I work with. Yes it can be Cabbed and use cerium to polish (it's softer than obsidian) and tumble it with obsidian and/or glass all the same way.

Yeah I've see eblay prices and they're crazy high I wish those were just inflated ebay prices but the stuff sells for the same price in local craigslist ads and at local rock and gem shows. The jewelry sells quick and for a good price so even at those prices for the rough there's still plenty of room for profit. Just kills me to pay that much for it so I rarely do. This Michigan craigslist seller has some of the best stuff I have seen. I know some folks that have bought from him and they were very happy. nmi.craigslist.org/jwl/5180670447.htmlChuck

I even have some that's above what I see in those pics. Pics 4 and 5 though on CL some of my rough looks like that and it's the not so favorable rough.

broseph82- yep I have slabbed some like what is shown in picture 5 and it was not very good for lapidary at all. The price for this stuff is all about the history and the location. It really has nothing to do with how nice it is to work with. I suppose some people could be cheating and selling stuff from other locations as true "leland" material. Happens with Fordite all the time. Chuck

your 2nd photo would pass as leland for sure. The third one might too. So does the stuff you find sell well or demand $15 per pound? I have no dog in this fight. I am not a big fan of slag glass by any means. I have only worked on it because of the local folklore that went with it and had requests for it.

I've seen it on eBay go from about $3-$9/lb.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but all of those look like Blue Chert and not Leland Blue
