While everyone was home for the holidays, I didn't want to solder, so I did some more of these tab settings. I really like doing them. Nice and simple with immediate gratification for my ADD self. Noreena jasper BIG chrysocolla Bruno jasper (with lots of dust on it- not scratches)

Beautiful work. I really like the copper! Two questions: Do you put the texture on copper or buy it that way? Do you put a "finish" on the metal to prevent tarnish? Or do you patina? (I know that's three questions.)
I have been working with copper for several years in the course of doing stained glass work. I do not buy it, rather take old copper from motors, used plumbing, etc... and clean it, shape it anneal it and re-use it. I have not tried making bezels but I might. Do you have advice on a protective coat for the metal?
Tried once to solder a copper finding but not happy with the results. Silver is to pricey. Anyway, thanks for the ideas and the photos.

Thanks I put the patina and the texture on. I don't use anything to seal. The liver of sulfur patina lasts a good long time. Just polish the high spots and it keeps looking better. I haven't tried recycling copper, I know people that do though. I just buy it by the pound roll at Rio pretty cheap. Saves a lot of time over the recycled stuff. As for a protective coat- most people swear by Renaissance Wax. That's a brand- look around the web for the best price. I have never used it, myself. If I were going to use heat to color the metal, I would seal with the wax, though. There is a shop which sells some good copper solder which matches really well. The shop seems to be down at the moment, however. I hope they aren't going out of business. They have the best copper solder. www.rawtreasures.com/item/wire/copper-wire-solder-20-gauge-ea/lid=43265225

I LOVE IT! I originally wanted to do the rollover bail too. I think it looks very elegant, but my sheet is too hard to bend like that and I don't know how to anneal. Do you think I can anneal sheet in a conventional oven or on a gas stove?

Do you think I can anneal sheet in a conventional oven or on a gas stove? Get yourself a butane creme brulee (?) torch. A good one to get is a Blazer brand one. You can do lots of stuff with it. It's not a replacement for a good torch, but it does do some small things and will certainly anneal small pieces. To anneal: Scribble on a healthy block of black Sharpie, torch. The Sharpie burns off at or near annealing temp. Here's a good site for info.

I have heard of the Renaissance Wax - I will look for it. Also have heard (but forgotten) about the copper solder. Thanks for this info. Really jealous of your skills. Practice, practice, practice -

Really like the one that is pierced, but they all look real good. You will have to invite people over more often if this is the result. Question: After you aneal the copper it gets real soft, how much working does it take to work harden it? Do you put it in a tumbler?

All three look terrific. Haven’t seen anyone cryin’ over a busted cab lately but that second one’s a neat cab-o-save concept.

Hammering in a texture does a fine job of hardening. Besides these small settings were done with 24g. No annealing was necessary and the gauge is plenty hard enough after work hardening.

Maybe you are referring to the very tip? I filed and sanded that down a hair to reduce the break risk. I've had that cab forever and wondered what to do with it. I had plans to wrap it, but I never did. I like this better.

Nope, didn’t think you busted it. Just a neat idea to keep in mind if someone did break one and wondered how to salvage something out of it.
