Picked up a new macro lens for the camera this week. I can now get the kind of shots I've been wanting to take, but was limited by minimum focus distance on my other lenses. Should be able to get better photos of small rocks and super tight close ups of any with interesting features.

I needed more photography gear like I need another hole in my head. I guess that's what makes them toys and not necessities.

What lens did you get? 2.4 x 50-105mm?

It's a Canon f2.8 100mm prime macro lens, but on an APS size sensor camera it's more like a 160mm. Opted to not get the L-series because there isn't much difference between the two in image quality, but $200 more.

Those are beautiful. I have a Sigma 50mm macro but when I get close the DOF is so tiny I can only see a small part of the rock in focus. I really like the close ups of the red Jasper?. The grain in them looks really neat.

(pics look sharp) I think Nikon has Canon beat on color saturation, good for wildlife/outdoor photography. Been a while since I did a spec comparison on the two lines. Love my L-series glass though.

The grain in them looks really neat. The 100mm lens lets me back up a bit and gain more DOF. If you're going close, you have to make sure the subject is on a parallel plane to the sensor or you won't get much DOF at all. Of course, I love throwing background out of focus and getting a nice bokeh to really set off the subject.

I have that lens. I have APS size chip. I have skills and ancillary equipment. I have polisshed stones,
Time is a 4 letter word.
I think i am going to set up a studio and leave it up. Then time wont hurt me. Set up and tear down take longer than the imaging.
Randy, you inspire me. Thank you. Nice thread.

I leave a strobe light on a stand, with a softbox attached to it, plugged in and ready to go in the basement. I also have a black plastic folding table from Walmart that goes up and down in seconds. It withstands abuse well from rough rocks and water when taking 'wet' pictures. If the rocks are already polished, I don't use the roughed up table, I'll throw down an appropriate background. I've got some squares of colored paper, white art board, several fabrics, etc. Just as long as it doesn't have a bunch of lint or fuzzies. All I have to do is grab the camera, plug in the sync chord to the light and start shooting. My kids are old enough now to make that possible. There was a time when I would have had to put everything back in storage for fear of breakage.

Garage Rocker For me it's space. But my guest bedroom just got freed up. Kidlet moved her stiff out! Now I can set up strobe and table and all. And leave it! I hope to stitch together many macros into giant images for very large format metallic prints. I have lots of empty walls.

Sweet macros. Fine photography as usual. Like the depth of the mosses. I think Dillon uses some intense light on his mosses and plumes.

My new macro lens has got me looking over all my tumbles for interesting patterns to isolate in abstract photos. Talk about endless possibilities. Mother Nature is the true artist, I reckon.
Ready-made art waiting to be captured...

And I love it!
