Bought a pound of this glass to use as an indicator of tumbler conditions. Drop 5-6 in with your rocks. Tells you how gentle you tumbler is. Does a good job. 1" X 1/4" X 1/8".

@shotgunner
The biggest problem with big rocks is frost. Or on a microscopic level frost or heavy impact loading that causes poor polish. Yes, it is a good separate thread subject. Thought it should be mentioned here too on the subject of big rocks. These things work. So does the chips I used to tumble(getting chipped at the thin edges).
Same situation as flying over a hurricane and dropping wind/pressure sensors in from high altitude. There are things that can be put in a tumbler to give information.
Yesterday I took a bunch of half tumbled rocks and sifted them to get 20 pounds of 1/2 to 1 inch rocks to use as smaller 'media' for a big rock. Those -short- barrels are trickier than the my old longer barrels for doing a big rock. Restrictive. So the smaller tumbles. One of the members tumbled a big rock with all small garnets in his rotary. Came out with a great polish. Can't find the thread, I believe it was Stone Canyon. But I think it took a long time.
You mentioned rock size proportion to the barrel size, the media size has a big effect too.
I hate to run ceramic media when I could be tumbling pretty media.

Many stick to a tried and tested routine, others deviate constantly. A broad range of information does get stashed here and there in this category.

Been in the vibe in AO 80, AO 80 did not put the desired shine so am doing AO 500. Then the AO 14,000. But I think he problem stems back to the rotary. Poor mixing. One rotation no noise, next rotation banging. Sounds like intermittent jamming. I am not happy with the grind in those small barrels yet. I am certain that the 2 inch media is not letting those big rocks move well. Getting ready to try 1/2 to 1 inch media to give the big rock more moving space. Still evolving. I'll rerun it in a heart beat if I can get stuff dialed in.

Zebra Lace out of the vibe AO 500 stage. Ready for polish. Dry. 1 pound 15 ounces. Garnets and pea size media. Hard ball sized coral with saddles ground into it with new diamond wheel to expose internal bands. wet. 2 days rolling. 3-4 inch coral heads a good size for this process. They have color bands accessible with diamond grinder. After 12 hours with clay added/SiC 30. Did complete clean out. Slurry about like this start to finish. Running the 'egg drop soup agate' ( rockpickerforever)together. Watching for bruises. About one pound each. smaller media, not all 2 inch stuff Yesterday this bloodstone was very bruised. Went to smaller media, more clay, slower 30 RPM running the bloodstone again gently with SiC 30 to finish removing my bruise job. very dry to see bruises Wood did not seem bruised. But changed out larger media in bucket to smaller media in tray. Sounds gentler. Wood too long for short barrels. Wood, wet. Hope it looks this polished in the end. Batch of largish coral running fast 55 RPM. Like 3 days. Entire contents in barrel as you see it. Looks like fast grind. It is rough and jagged. Above coral 3 days ago. (Selected from above tray)

Forgot this one. No one sure about the ID on the big rock. whatever it is it laughed at my diamond wheel. So it was sawn to remove trash and tumbled as a faceted stone. Hardest agate on earth. From Roy. I was mad at it so it is getting tortured at 55 RPM.

Hey Jim I am trying your big rock in a 12 pound Lortone drum. Big chunk of rose quartz from the Hogg. Got normal smalls about a inch to smaller and a few 2 inch spalls of coral.
Also trying some very large smoky and amethyst quartz in a 12 pound barrel with nothing but plastic beads. Only 5 tennis ball size pieces in the barrel. Who knows...

As you know crystalline quartz can be bruise sensitive. Let it dry out well at some point and check for satin finish without the bruises. Bruises funny about hiding even when slightly damp. You know all that. 5 tennis balls, do you have pea gravel or ceramic or something hard and small for media instead of the plastic ? Thinking the plastic may take a long time... I wish you were doing coral or agate or wood. Keep an update. what's in this box

Pulled the 2+ lb Rio out of my tumble. It was slowly coming along, but it was just not going to ever be a good looking rock. So why waste a month or more on it? Probably a beauty inside, but the outer skin didn't show enough promise to invest any more time on it. Will feed it to the saw. Replaced with an equivalent sized chunk of Stone Canyon rough with one side faced by saw. It will take awhile to get where I want it, but at least I've got something in there now that will end up high on the awesome scale. The smalls, mostly Rios, in this batch are progressing nicely. They will be ready to move on long before the Stone Canyon. When it is time, I will pull them to move on and replace with either more Rio agates or whatever else strikes my fancy.
I need to build my ganged saw blade grinder to play this game. On my list.
