I need to build a ganged saw, too. Has been on someone's "honeydew" list for a while, even have the parts to make it already! Exactly what you said, captbob - "why waste a month or more on it" when you can pre-shape it first. Saves time, grit, electricity, aggravation... Feeding a "wasteoftimeite" into the saw may get you something better. Who knows? It's sorta like what the computer guys always say - GIGO (garbage in, garbage out). Gotta start with something decent, don't spend a lot of time on it, and know when to relegate it to the yard, or feed it to the saw!

I think the box has a Styrofoam peanut in it Jim! LOL
Just curious about quartz and plastic beads. I bough s gallon of them when I first started tumbling snd never used them so decided to put them to work. I have done a bunch of quartz of all colors and it did great. BUt it also took a while and ate half a barrel of ceramics eaten up fast so it was time to experiment.

Slow grind is better than beat up rocks. are you collecting quartz near your home ?

Jim I figure they might grind faster in a 12 pound barrel with plastic beads than the small quartz do in a 3 pound barrel. Remember I let mine roll at least two months b4 checking. Cheap skate on grit! LOL I get Hogg Mine rose quartz and trade Hillbilly Wire Twisting for amethyst and whatever in Quartzsite.
Yep I thing one great big Styrofoam peanut should do you. Hawg turds weigh too much and smell odd! LOL

Y'all send them to me and I'll pre-grind them. Send them back packed in some of that magic Georgia clay? I have a real greasy clay spot on a hill top back in the woods. Half mile ATV trip to get it. Ran out and was using my sandy clay last couple of weeks and it foams for some reason. When it foams the grit does NOT break down fast at all. The slurry from the real greasy clay makes a slurry exactly like expensive paint that needs thinning, very slick, glossy, silky and heavy. It is that clay that excels. It is a little steep spot that ATV's have a hard time climbing when it is wet. It is just like the clay that covers most of the high areas all around here. I am near the river and most of the clay is sandy in this micro environment. Let me know if you want to try it. LFRB ? I can pull one rock or look in barrel and know instantly if the grit is broken down. If there is grit particles of any size they will be distributed evenly in this slurry and visible as grains sticking up out of the slurry. Even grit distribution a big player in a tumbler. The only way that happens is with a heavy slurry. Watery slurry is constantly washing the particles down. Screws up even distribution in a bad way. Every minute you run with water is slowing you down. By the time you move the barrel off the shafts and turn it horizontal a watery slurry will wash much of the grit particles down. Drop a particle of SiC 30 in clean water and watch it sink like a lead ball. Drop it in mud slurry and it won't travel an eighth of an inch. Most of the grind is in the top of the rock pile....

I will say a barrel length twice to 3 times it's diameter is much easier to get water and rock level correct. These 6" X 6" barrels are finicky with a large rock in them, both rock level and water level and amount of clay needed. 1/2 cup SiC 30 and 1 cup clay has finally started working. But, having to measure close.
They are easy to set up with average sized tumbles.

orrum Bill is gonna get me. Opening box now. All is not visible yet due to padding. Ah, a knife !! Of coral. Looks like heat treated coral from the infamous Withlacoochee River. Too tuff. Hafted onto handmade wood handle. Wicked sharp. Somebody named Bill has stepped up his knapping skills to pro level. Another knapping art work. Miniature Turkey Tail ? Bill ? Point type ? Also Withlacoochee spice coral. Thank you thank you Bill. Is this some of the coral I gave you when you stayed with us ?

Hey Jim glad u opened the box!!! Yes that is coral you gave me when I visited. Heat treated to 625 in my turkey roaster, as high as it goes!!! It is tuff to get a flake off. Needs more heat but is doable. They both came from the same coral, look at the top of the blade next to the handle, the color matches there. The arrowhead point was a bear to knapp because the part it came from wanted to crush instead of pull a flake off. I persisted because it is nicer to have a set from the same rough. The lovely Susan makes the handles and does all the finish work. We wanted it to be geographically correct for blade and handle material to be from same area. The handle has 3 coats of hand rubbed Tru Oil. Its a gunstock finish agent. Therefore we used Bald Cypress for the handle since Florida has them. The wrap is dyed rawhide from a whitetail deer, self done. It's naturally white b4 dye.
Your coral is great for knapping Jim, sharp as a scaipel!!
Sorry it took so long to make you something, you were very generous with raw rough coral and slabs plus heat treated slabs! Not to mention raw tumbles ready for the tumbler and finished tumbles!

Thanks orrum Bill. You guys went out all the way. My first hafted knife. Native materials. Special to me . Stashed it in my treasure box for now. Gotta figure a display. I have a 1% allotment of wall space in the house. Deer antlers. Would gel well there. Make my hunting buddies jealous.
