thekingofrock , frikkin awesome work. What do you think it weighs now? You could make one of those fountains where the sphere is supported by water.

Turntable rotating on a lazy Susan bearing and the ball rotating randomly on three of these Random rotations by hand and the rotation of the grinder/pads.... But only after you have roughed it out all the way around.

I believe its around 85 ot 90 lbs. Much appreciated. I am seriously considering doing that with this one. As far as the one in the video, I have been there and touched it with my own hands. I believe that one weighs in around 23 tons. Believe me, i have dreamed of a sphere grinder big enough to make those big balls. Lol

Thanks, but i really want to find a nice piece of quartz or a really exotic rock for the next one now i know i am capable..does anyone know where i would find something like this? Granites and marbles that you work with in the countertop industry are darn good candidates. I tell you, I grind agate in one to two pound sizes to tumble polish with a diamond cup wheel and it is way way harder than granite. It probably would have taken 6-8 turbos or more to do what you did on agate that size. If I were you, I would look into the prettiest quarried rock. Onyx family. Rhodochrosite. Granitoids. Marbles. Some softer jaspers. Madagascar labradorite(a felspar). The African quarries produce fine material. The pink granite you choose for that project is quarried here in Georgia in 5' X 5' X 10' blocks commonly. Great selection on your part. Tate Georgia is marble capital of Georgia. There is a member named Jason that mines fine onyx. @shotgunner knows him. Scott ?

But.
The marble is the purest white one can imagine. Boring.

This is a very enjoyable thread, I couldn't imagine attempting a project like this. Amazing really since it's your first time at making a sphere and humongous at that. Bravo!

Thanks.. i like to go extreme. I've said this already, but i am very happy with the results and it makes my OCD happy too. I guess, holding an angle grinder in my hands daily for the past 20 years has paid off when it comes to this..

Fairly strenuous activity with a lot of noise to take your mind off an achy (in my case) worn out body.

I also think it's a good way to sort out the problems of the day.. the noise and strenuous activity provides a solitude that you cant find anywhere else.

Maybe they need to design exercise machines that make such noise when engaged. I wear out an angle grinder about every 3 months in my welding biz, similar noisy --brainless-- activity.

Pressure wash stuff. Same solitude, way less work.
I'd pressure wash crap all day if I could.

That mask comes down, I focus on the pool of molten metal and the world disappears. Making smaller spheres is noisy work so I wear earplugs and that has a similar effect. jamesp ---> welding too?

Welding is hypnotic and gives fine sense of progress. Sticking steel together makes things in a hurry. Presto, instant results. Lest you weld something in the wrong place, always a bad day.
