Rhyolite or jasper or something else? I'm not sure how to tell the difference between the two.

Me either, but it doesn't look very good to me.

Still waiting on mine but they have a bit further to travel to get to me. Looks like a difficult job ahead. But the good news is that it will be the same for everyone

Definitely doesn't look like it's going to polish easily.

Will be interesting to see if anyone figures out how to make them shine. I don't think you are allowed to heat treat them or anything like that ? I am interested because I found some really fantastically figured rock like shown, but it only takes a matte finish based on my abilities. Very coarse grained compared to our usual tumbler materials. Watching with interest.

The breaks arent glassy but they aren't hackly or grainy either.
I predict happiness for everyone.
Do they publish rules? Like regarding heat treat or per ground by hand or whatever?

Applicants are permitted to remove (before or after your rough tumble) spalls, chips, cracks and any other imperfections on a grinding wheel. After this initial cleanup, the rock must be allowed to go through and complete the tumbling process without any further handwork. No hand polishing or grinding is permitted after the tumbling process begins and after completion. The following is permitted and is determined by the tumbler: resizing of the initial rough rock, total number of tumbling stages, the grit types and sizes, the selection of pre-polish and polish materials, use of media, use of a burnishing process, the amount of tumbling time, and whether to use a rotary and/or vibratory tumbler. Dry Wet I started tumbling half of them to see what happens in the rough grind, don't want to ruin the whole batch....lol. I hope Fossilman is right because these don't look very promising. Good luck Scotty!

meviva, you got me nervous with that last post so I went downstairs and checked on my rocks. They've been in since Saturday, so five days. They are grinding at least as fast as Petoskey stones, which are about 3 on the Mohs scale. They're smoother than I thought they would be, but must be very soft. I'm sort of showing my hand here, but hey, we're all friends, right?

Jugglerguy I wasn't sure you had entered by your first response to this thread. Good luck to you too!! I was afraid they would dissolve during the first stage...lol...happy to know they didn't. Andrea

I decided to just jump in head first and threw all my rocks into one barrel on Sunday. Made up the extra with some amethyst I had sitting around. My plan was to check them tonight and see how they're progressing. Rob, I really like your progress so far. I think these will be a fun challenge! Even if they don't get super shiny, they are quite beautiful.

Lots of rocks are seriously grainy and still polish with the best.
Rob posts benchmark...

ChicagoDave , keep a close eye (sure you will) using amethyst as filler. Pretty hard rock for filler with a stone that Rob says is grinding away as fast as Petoskey stones.
