Yeah, you're right, marcasite should be gold.

That picture is fantastic, why apologize? I've got a long way to go on my photos to even come close.
Peace, Rich

This is a real old piece, sorry abt the picture quality. This was taken with a lot of light. Wherever there is metal, it is black without direct light. I'm wondering about marcasite now...... I think all that I knew about it was that it might have been Mexican because I called it Mexican Paisley. Wow! That's pretty!

Did this ever get solved? This is one of my first stops while trying to identify this same material, of which I bought a pound of awhile back and finally just got the cajones together to try to tumble it. I believe it was sold simply as chrysocolla. I can’t remember the provenance either if it said it. I have more places to search. Like try to find the original bag/order form/website I ordered from etc. I thought all it would take was a simple google search and I would find my answer but the first link was this thread so this was my first stop. I will say this, I’ve encountered it before. I have polished a few stray harder pieces over the years but I can’t recall if it was on those or other pieces. Right now I am polishing an entire batch of this stuff and my god is it gorgeous! If I find a definitive answer, I’ll be back. I jotted down some of the suggestions listed here to look up and compare. But yes black greasy in one angle and silver gold high shine metallic at another with chrysocolla, cuprite, azurite, and all the other secondary copper friends of theirs making appearances. Unfortunately I just did a grit change and already sealed the barrel and it’s tumbling or I’d add some pictures. I will when I can. If something is stumping this many seasoned rockhounds, it must be solved!

Alright guys, I promised I’d be back so here I am. I was just about to return jumping and screaming “Tenorite! It’s Tenorite!” And that is because every single example I can find online so far labels it as Chrysocolla with Tenorite. And there are A LOT of them. Just Google it and you’ll see. It’s definitely our mystery rock. However, as I arrowed back to return to this thread I accidentally got confused and clicked on this link to this thread… www.mindat.org/mesg-524309.htmlWhich is a very similar thread of some more confused and enthralled rockhounds by this enigmatic material. As I read the comments there though, it only got much more muddied. One comment in particular got me. This poster seems quite confident that there is a pattern of people calling it Tenorite when It May not be. In fact, the top two other guesses over there were hematite pseudo after Goethite and iron oxide Pseudomorph after pyrite due to an image that shows cubic twinned crystals in the elusive black material. So…we either solved it with Tenorite or are back to square 1.5ish with hematite but with the Goethite twist. Which I need to look at again because I feel like I have a few pieces of that and recall it looking quite differently. Much differently in fact. And then the pseudomorphed pyrite idea I will need to look into as well. There’s my update. I’ll be back if and when I know more.

Just going to put this here for now while I go research it so I don’t lose it. I know Congo shattuckite has been mentioned. I knew shattuckite was blue so I disregarded it earlier but that’s because I didn’t know it contained bornite, papagoite, malachite and plancheite all in a copper matrix. Most of those are unknown to me. I’ll be back. spiritrockshop.com/product/103g-aa-grade-shattuckite-from-kimpese-congo/

Check out this beauty. Sure looks like what’s rumbling around in my tumbler right about now. www.etsy.com/listing/1496181854/Possible trade names so far: Apache Gem Silica Chrysocolla Chrysocolla & Tenorite Congo Shattuckite Chrysocolla & Marcasite** **Edit: found this listing a second later. These are all clearly the same material just being attributed different identities. Which makes sense giving how it seems our entire community is befuddled by this. I’m so invested at this point I don’t know if I’ll sleep tonight. www.etsy.com/listing/1561313714/

I don't know anything about this beautiful stone but I think you're last one on the list, Chrysocolla and Marcasite was already ruled out earlier in the thread because Marcasite flashes gold.
