My nephew just sent me a couple pictures of rocks that he found in a stream in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan's U.P. I'll post his description: Any ideas what they are?

Would you consider the base rock a sandstone? Lots of that stuff near market. Leverite?

I can't answer any of these questions because I'm seven hours away from the rock. I know what you know. If I go up there this summer, he said that he'd like me to bring it home and cut it.

Yeah, cut it!
It might be a stack of plagioclase needles (with what I don't know). Whatever it is, the internal behaviour is likely to mirror the exterior and you should beware undercutting. Interesting though and definitely worth further investigation.

Rob
Make him scratch test with a knife. He can't expect much without some clues.
