I think there's a ton of rock hunting going on in Eastern Oregon. I'm still trying to get Washington figured out, but I've read about Sunstone and Carnelian coming out or Eastern Oregon. I've been all through there fishing (Oregon is home to some of the best fly-fishing in the US), and it gets really rocky in places. There has been an enormous amount of glacial and volcanic activity there as well, which is bound to create some interesting rocks. You should have good hunting.
Keep a stick handy for the rattle snakes, though.

Shorty, you are going to perhaps one of the most beautiful areas there is. The folks who live there are some of the most loopiest folks I have ever run into and nothing seems to make sense. Remember, the prior Oregon state motto used to be, Visit, just leave your money and go home. The Klamath and Applegate is full of gold, there is petrified wood, and Oregon opals, red obsidian, blue obsidian, snowflake obsidian, sunstone, to name a few. In front yards of peoples homes, you will find treasures that are unimagineable. As an irony, I tried to make a go at lapidary and handmade jewelery and my work just fell flat. There was my profound confusion. So much natural beauty and all people wanted was from China. They loved my work untill I told them I made it and it was handmade. I cannot tell you how many times they would say, "Handmade, I want real jewelery" and put it all back. I never figuired it out. I went to Floriduh and the same work cleaned the clock. I would still be there if my wife's mother did not start showing her age. She is 88 and she has started dropping things. Oregon has a lot of profoundly beautiful rock formations. I wish you the best there. If you are going to build, have you considered the Pyramodule? My wife and I are looking at building one of those on our land in Lancaster Ca. Very efficient, and reasonably earthquake resistant. Yes, Oregon has some big earthquakes.

are you moving there? here's an article on oregon rocks that gives some info: Oregon Rocks!

Oregon Rocks!
Oregon is a land of many natural wonders. One such wonder includes the vast wealth of minerals and rocks. Rock hounding, or searching for these hidden treasures, is a favorite pastime of residents and tourists alike. Among the riches of Oregon are gold, agates, picture rock (jasper), sunstones, petrified wood, fossils, pyrite crystals, quartz crystals, and obsidian.
In 1965, the Thunderegg, or geode, was named the State Rock of Oregon and in 1987, the Oregon Sunstone was named the Oregon State Gemstone. With the eruption of Mount Mazama (which is now Crater Lake) and other volcanoes, Oregon has several rich deposits of volcanic material, consisting mostly of Thundereggs and obsidian. The volcanic heat forged these “Ugly Ducklings” and the volcanic force shot them out into the atmosphere to cool with the ugly hard lava shell and an incredibly beautiful interior. Some of the interiors are crystalline and gemlike. The Priday Agate beds in the Ochoco Mountains have some of the best thundereggs. The obsidian is like looking into black glass. The extreme heat that formed it, heated it to the temperature needed for glassmaking and then conditions allowed it to cool slowly enough not to crack or split.
Sunstones can be found in the Southern Oregon area near Lakeview and Plush. Check out the additional information you can find about obsidian in the Glass Butte area here at Tim’s Rock On site.
Picture rock or Jasper almost seems to depict scenery of mountain, river and trees, when sliced open. The most famous comes from the Biggs Junction area near the Columbia River.
The Oregon Agate and Mineral Society is located in Portland and includes chapters throughout the State. All year, rockhound clubs plan trips to the various fields and rockhounders traipse from county to county all summer long to sell their wares at “pow wows,” festivals, and fairs. A calendar of events is posted to the Mt. Hood chapter website and though, not up-to-date, is indicative of the normal circuit. The rockhounders arrive in their campers and Airstream trailers at fairgrounds and empty lots setting up shop to display the brilliant colors and shapes of Oregon’s underground.
When my grandparents retired from business in Southern Oregon, they joined this nomadic life and we were always guaranteed a visit during the carnival atmosphere of the Madras Rockhound Pow Wow at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, the Prineville Rockhound Pow Wow at the Crook County Fairgrounds and the Redmond Rock Show at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds. We trailed behind my parents in the hot Central Oregon sun, oohing and ahhing at the “raw” minerals and the finished products the rockhounders created using the saws and polishers they set up behind their display tables. The rocks are dull and uninteresting until sprayed with a little water. Then their true nature emerges. The rockhounders make beautiful jewelry from the various colored crystals, rocks, and turquoise from the Southwest United States, then set them into silver and gold fittings. My favorite, though, has always been wind chimes created from different sized slices of the same rock – usually agates. Each slice plays a different note and creates hauntingly beautiful tunes in a gentle breeze.
Come take a look at our rocks and since I’m in the mood to share, I’ll let you in on a secret. The best rock shop in the state is in Central Oregon on Highway 97, just south of Redmond. It is on the East side of the highway, just has a big sign that says, “Agates” and when you pull in for a visit, I guarantee you’ll go home with a rock or two in your hand. My favorites are the spheres and egg shapes of obsidian and picture rock. They are cool to the touch, but warm up in your hand and are very difficult to put down. and here's a site: www.orerockon.com/ore_rock.htmand here's a way cool slideshow of some oregon rockhounding and after watching this i'm tempted to go pack a bag ;D community.webshots.com/scripts/show.fcgi?t=slideshow&ID=35118225&key=rLpVwrand here's some more info: www.oregongeology.com/learnmore/gems.HTMjust go on and get my room ready ;D. my friend from idaho is coming again next week and is bringing me a 5 gal. bucket full of rocks. i need to hide all those rocks in the rock room so i'll look rock poor and he'll keep 'em coming ;D. i'm jealous shorty! kim
