Recently showed this to a geologist friend from the area. He focuses on how past geological events shaped the topography of the area. Very interested in items related to the large mountains/volcanoes that covered the area billions of years ago.
He said it looked volcanic. The 3 different colors of what he called Scoria type, intrigued him. Rather unique for the area, well anywhere in WI (according to him)Also the white “frothy” areas, which he said appeared to be a type of chalcedony or Arsenic. He was fascinated with the hair like crystals.
He said it was a museum piece, then jokingly tried to put it in his pocket. Well, reached towards his pocket with it.
He estimated age to be over 1 billion years old. From when the volcanoes were erupting. Also . thought the current permafrost in the area helped to preserve it. Baffled at why it was just laying on the edge of the creek bed. Note the area was a small canyon. There is a link to a photo of the area below.
Know there are lots of new members here. Since I posted some pretty bad photos of this before, will try again.
Since I have this on display, it is becoming very dusty. Colors are much brighter than pictured. Any ideas on specific type of volcanic rock, why there are the 3 colors, what the other materials within the rock are?
Any ideas for how I should carefully clean? Was thinking a soaking in Biz with warm water. Then multiple “dunk” rinses. It is very fragile.
Then packing away until I can afford a proper display case.
One Thumb below, rest in Flickr Album. Second Flickr link is a photo of the area found. Not my album.
