The neighbors hate shipping containers. grin Thought about burying one in the FRONT yard for a shop. No room in back yard since I built the pool for the dogs. Would have to take down two oak trees to do so. Wife (see... it's ALWAYS her nixing my ideas!!) frowned on my plan. Had all the details figured out too! Needless to say, I don't have a shipping container buried in my front yard. *sigh* Maybe move to Arkansas Everyone has one buried there. MAybe after a couple months, the ball and chai..Uh meant dear wifey will let you move back to Florida and bury one there. I like the idea of one for a shop. Bomb and bullet proof. What a great shop.

That's a pretty darn sweet sphere Scott. Nice job! Size? That sphere machine yours or one at your club? How large of a sphere can you make? Time from start of grind to finish?

I'm not that happy with it. But it is fun to finish one finally. Over 5" and the largest I have made to date. I used my sphere machine to take it from rough to spherical. then last night on class machines thru the stages and polish. Can I make? Prolly 7" or so. Because I use diamond cores for roughing it in my total time investment is about 5 hours on this one. The greatest amount of time on these is going from rough sphere to true sphere, diamond cores do this fast on all materials but agates.

Why aren't you happy with it Scott, the flat spot? Looks pretty nice to me and took a good polish for the material.
I think you should be quite proud of it!!

That looks great to me. I have always wanted a smaller sphere. say, 3" to 4". Just have to get the saw to cut my Rose Quartz in half and find someone to make a few from it. Your work as always is excellent.

I'll take one thing back. The diamond core bits are great for most materials. But, this unknown green stuff from James? It's a 3" ball but took over 10 hours roughing it to spherical. Kept having to dress that cups

How do you dress the grinding cups Scott? And what is happening that allows you to know that they need to be dressed?

How do you dress the grinding cups Scott? And what is happening that allows you to know that they need to be dressed? The cups make a clear scratching/cutting sound when cutting properly. The sound becomes smooth. At which time I put grit on the ball like old school. This exposes more diamond and cutting is resumed. As for what I am not happy with? You said it. "For the material..." i expected more based on a polished window, it's colors and polish. I dont believe there is a flat spot? My next one should be bigger. That huge perkinsville agate I borke down on the 36" at class.

I gotcha ya. Didn't know that grit would expose more diamond. Makes sense.
Probably just the picture. 1st pic right on the edge at 2 o'clock is what I was seeing.
Do spheres undercut or can't they in that the cups remove material uniformly?
I envy (for now) your toys! Sphere making is definitely the direction I want to head next.

Do spheres undercut or can't they in that the cups remove material uniformly? I envy (for now) your toys! Sphere making is definitely the direction I want to head next. That is an illusion. (ETA and a very thin section of pink fledspar I had nevrer seen this on anything but the phone) I'll fill you in on a secret. The path to zero flats is paint. I paint all the flats on a cube. Purple works... Lol The idea is, if you see purple, it ain't round. So, when running the core cups I rinse the ball off occasionally. When the purple is gone, time to move on. Use different color for charoite and amethyst... Ha! If you use grit, the floating grit particles will cause undercutting. Preferentially cutting softer stuff more. My long term goal is to lose grit entirely. But isn't granite pads has proven problematic. I'll solve it. Someday.
