Brand new to the group. Me, my wife, and my 4 kids ages 5- 16 have all become bit with the rock collecting bug. I've had it all my life but have recently got everyone hooked. Now I'm no expert but do have a quest for knowledge of rocks and the hobby of cutting and polishing. We are from Texas and on a trip to the alpine area found this. Its about the size of softball but almost a perfect cube. It has the blue stone you can see coming out of it and you can see a few other spots of white and copper like crystal coming out. Its volcanic for sure and looks like pumice but its reddish brown but is much more dense than pumice. I'd say it weighs 3 lbs. Any guess on whats inside and thoughts on what we found? Should we cut it in two? Thanks and thank you for letting for letting us join the group! The rock in question is the avatar pic! Thanks!

Hi, Cliff here from Colorado Welcome to you and the family to the forum. Saber, Mel is in that area and knows what you have. He'll be along and tell you for sure. Also a bunch of other people know what you got. If you cut it, cut a slab off the side to make a window. At this point the kids will like the big and pretty rock more than seeing it sliced and diced. One lady on here is from your area but has moved up to her Colorado mountain home for the summer. Really good at all areas of rock and has good equipment also. Maybe time to invest in a reasonable priced tile saw from Home Depot or some place like that. to cut your own stuff. The kids will love it. Again welcome and BTW Adave just posted a thread on how to link pictures. I don't do it for the time angle and the sanity thing.. grin. Cliff

There is a rock club in Houston you may look into joining. Houston Gem and Mineral club, they have a lapidary shop. Neat rock you found.

Being cubic sounds like a pyrite. The brown can also be limonite, which is a mix of iron oxides and hydroxides. Iron bearing rocks can convert in to limonite.

Thanks. I see how to get pics on and will do that tomorrow. Cube was a bad choice of words on my part. The rock is completely asymmetrical but has 4 sides and is roughly square. Ill get the pics up soon. Thank you all for the tips thus far.

That lighter area is nice looking agate. I wonder if the whole thing is an agate with some type of oxide coating and that are chipped off exposing it.

So I have picked up rocks all my 39 years, and my dad before me did it, but its never translated into the phase I want to go now - which is the cutting, polishing and presenting. I have about a ZERO clue of what to do next. I have googled trying to find a place in Houston to cut this but have struck out. I did see the post about the club to join and will. Any suggestions on cutting it? Like where it can be cut and where physically on the rock to cut?

That needs to be cut . SOON ! Yep Cut a window in it at least and look inside. Tile saw is cheap at Home Depot or like Morerockspleas said get the family in the local rock club. Wonderful family recreation, good for you guys for getting the kids into a lifelong love of the rocks.
