stardiamond Your Genie trim saw is exactly the idea I just had from your above post. I think you were trying to post in another thread but it gave me an idea for this “rocks that shouldn’t be cut with oil” thread. Anyway I have an old retired Inland flat lap that has a little mini trim saw attachment. I think this would work great to make do for water cutting only materials. 👍

I have cut malachite, sodalite, variscite, lapis, rhodochrosite, in oil saws with no problems. I'm not about to empty my 14 or 18" saws to use water and I have cut big rough in those stones, way too big for a 10" saw. My 14" runs in ATF transmission oil and I had almag in the 18. Yeah, they get a little oil on them but as soon as the slab is sawn it goes right in the kitty litter for a few days-a week. The litter absorbs the oil right back out and if they look like they have a little oil left they go in a plastic tub in the slop sink my washing machine empties into. After a couple/few loads of laundry they are clean and oil free. I do have a 10" and 6" Raytech saws which are easy to change back and forth oil to water to oil due to the removable sumps and sometimes use water in those. If using trim saws with oil all preforms go right in the kitty litter too and if necessary in the washing machine outlet. If your washing machine outlet is not usable Dawn soap removes oil quite well, especially in hot water but the kitty litter usually does the job.

gunsil Good info, thank you. I actually haven’t started using kitty litter yet. I’ve been wondering, does it matter what kind? There’s the old original type which is kind of larger pellets and then the newer kind that is basically clumping sand. Do both kinds work?

I use whatever is cheap, guess it's the older style. I have a big tub with five pounds of it under my slab saw and another smaller tin with maybe a pound in it by my trim saws. If you know a mechanic speedy dri oil absorber is good too. One note: you can use kitty litter for oil on your garage floor but cannot use speedy dri for kitty litter. Basically the same stuff (dried clay chips) but the kitty litter has been sterilized. As a mechanic I used to bring speedy dri home for cat litter but my cat got a foot infection and the vet said it came from the speedy dri. Speedy dri only comes in huge sacks, most mechanics just take some home from their shops for home garage use. This is not an instantaneous process, slabs or preforms need to sit in it for a couple days to suck the oil out. I also stir them once a day to get fresh absorbent on them. Items need to be fully covered in the litter. Try it, you might be amazed how it gets the oil out and it doesn't cost much.

gunsil Aww, sorry about your cat, but obviously it wasn't intentional. Hope she/he's ok. Thanks for the info again. Actually sounds like a good and easy little improvement I can make because so far I'm not doing anything to soak up the oil.

I think I use oil dri. At wallyworld or your automotive store. It's a sack no bigger than you average big bag of dog food. $10 will last you forever.

Khara, it was actually my girlfriend's cat and that was fifty years ago and yes, the cat was fine after vet's medicine. My cats have always been inside/outside cats and I never had a litter box. Peruano, oil dri is same as speedy dri, there may well be other brand names. I have so much junk I hardly have room for a big bag of it and maybe a little lazy, Walmart is 15 miles away and supermarket is two. Much cheaper to get the big bag if you can use it for sure. That, and it seems to last forever before it no longer absorbs. Of course I am not into high production, but it still seems to last a long time.
