rockjunquie melhill1659Mine arrived this morning. All unpacked now. Trouble: there is a tube with a “screwdriver “ type thing in it by the motor. I don’t see it in any of his photos or on this thread. That implies that it is temporary. However, it doesn’t lift off. I think it must, so I can get to those two screws to attach the lamp. I’ve emailed him, but not heard back yet. Opinion? Thanks.

You have to bolt the lamp into place. Is that what you are referring to? Can you send a picture?
The screwdriver thing is the tool for removing the grinding wheel and any other nuts.

Pat I noticed that he changed his packaging a bit since the unpack instructions were written, wonder if he had some help with that part of the business in the past. Wish someone was around to help him update, but I doubt he wants to become so visible he has to go into mass production. I'm not going to talk him up anywhere else, especially facebook. I can trust the folks here to treat him with respect.

I emailed him several times today and sent a photo. He was most helpful. Got it all together, and will check it out tomorrow.
Seems to me that getting a 90 degree angle on a piece would be easy because both the plate and wheel/disk are stationary.

Keeping his orders in a positive light from people who have Lapidary experience would be best.

I am really interested is getting one of these, the simple design is perfect for so many applications. Does anyone know if the laps are available commercially, or just through Al? Thanks.

I'm going to get a few more from him. The prices are reasonable and I want to support him. Not saying you should- just that I am. Each grit is 61 plus shipping. They have a full metal backing. ETA- correction- they do not have a full metal backing. But they are heavy and good quality.

I have been in contact with Al the past Couple days and during one of our phone conversations he told me he just turned 92 or was fixing to turn 92. Yep he is quite the gentleman. Well I guess I am one of the last Hold Out's to get one of these things. Besides I had some bench space kinda reserved for a lap while I was designing building the shop. When Mel first posted this I thought well here it is! After my conversation with Al its like why wouldn't I be part of this amazing legacy? I mean I look at you ladies who I respect more and more each day and see you all have purchased from him so why wouldn't I? He should get my Ck by Friday it will be a pleasure using his equipment. As you can see the Cab King is pretty Lonely All by itself on the Bench. ~Duke

I have yet t finish an intarsia, but I have used it many times. It is quite convenient to flatten a back or whatever.

Like Tela, I haven’t finished my first one. Took a week to soak off pieces badly done. I’ve also made progress on the redo.
I have yet to receive the extra piece I ordered with the grinder. It was $100, but I forget what it was. His supplier was in the hospital. I’ll email Al for an update on the situation.
The grinder is easy to use and wonderful. I use it frequently.
Duke, you have plenty of room for 3-4 grinders! Enjoy😀

Pat rockjunquie I only got the grinder and the extra 600 grit wheel but my plans are to get some other Groceries for it along with the dished Cab wheels. I just received another E-Mail from him this morning we are getting to be quite the Pen Pals. Un-Knowing to him if the Good Lords willing and the Creek Don't rise Maryjane and I will be going to Fla for a few months this winter (was going to do it last year before I got Stroked out.) And I will take Al up on his offer of a Visit. I will get lessons from the Pro on use of the Machine. Here is his E-Mail to me this Morning and yep he is fixin to be 92 What say we all sign a card for him I will send it to Tela She sends it to Pat Ect and Back to me And I will Send It with a Nice Mug My Wife and I Etch as a Gift for his 92nd B Day Hows that Sound? I showed him a Youtube Video of my Snow Chucker I Built because he was talking about snow shoveling. Here is his E-Mail from this morn: Happy Florida morning to you, Duke,,, Hey friend, that snow-eater of yours is quite the accomplishment,,, congratulations! Rave reviews! Turning 92 in July, if it's in the cards? Still do an 80+ hour work week sneaking an afternoon snooze most days. My lil workshop & home are on several acres (will include an aerial when I ship) & also face the Intra-Coastal Waterway (plenty of shellfish for the taking). Tool maker skills & accuracy a religion drove me into inventing, small business owner at 27 and from there, I could write a book describing experiences, travels, accomplishments, cheating death, no one would believe so why waste precious time there's never enough of, right? The Grinder is a nice low volume under the radar business which introduces a class of folks very special, since I'm wired tightly with Wm. Holland School of Lapidary Arts up in Georgia, starting in the earliest 80's, helping founders Sparky and wife Mary Lou build the School? A relationship still strong with current owner Suzanne (Sparky's daughter). I also have a prototype 6" Trim Saw pretty well finished that will sell under $300, + an el cheapo faceting machine prototype that finished will sell under $1000 + + +... So, there's plenty of meat on the bone to chew on in years to come. You correctly state where the money once was, having been pissed away, the remaining pile of red ink in the TRILLIONS, multiplying like crazy by the minute, leaves no question in this mind that very soon, the U.S. will cave in. So what then? My guess is, only those who have a bunch of skills and can do without all that is now taken for granted,,, will survive. Am I right? Who knows for sure? At my age, it doesn't matter all that much, but for the young, now believing everything is OK because they are on Face Book, have electronic hand held gadgets that lead them by the nose, live on Pizza and garbage foods, what in store for them? We'll see? I send Florida blessings! Al :-)

TheRock - I think getting a card going is a great idea. I really respect the man- even more so after reading the email. I have only gotten the grinder and 3 wheels from him, but I hope to be able to purchase more when and if I can.... and soon. The machine is awesome! When I ordered my last wheel, I asked him about truing up the disc (which it turns out you don't have to do). It brought up something I thought was kinda funny. On the left hand side towards the back, there is a thing that looks like a handle with a red knob on top. I had wondered what it was for. He told me he put it there for the ladies. It's for leverage while changing the discs. Very thoughtful addition. I hope he can keep going for a long time yet. ETA- I sure hope you can get down there to see him and get a demonstration. Please, please take some video. I am dying to see the angle attachment thingie in action. That would be awesome of you!
