hello members, I recently acquired an older facetron machine which doesn't have the dial indicator . I would like to have one fitted . I haven't found much info on the web about this. I have emailed the facetron company but received no answer. Does anyone have any knowledge of this or have seen someone else having it done?

The Jarvi Tool factory will upgrade your Facetron faceting head with a dial indicator and calibrate the head for a flat fee of $500. That price includes any worn parts that may need replacing in the head. It usually takes about two weeks turnaround.

hi members, well after faceting 5 stones now, im getting used to using the strain gauge on the facetron and getting good results. I may be able to get by without the dial indicator addition. we will see.

Well I have decided to go ahead with sending my facetron back to the factory for dial indicator installation and calibration/ replacement of worn parts. Just as quailriver said the cost quoted to me is $500. The present turn around time is 4 weeks , so its now on its way to California . Ill post the outcome when I get it back. Ill be able to use the machine as a hard stop machine after the modification, which I am more used to after having an ultra tec and a graves which were both hard stop machines.

I've struggled with the "hard stop" feature. It seems like there is a little variance on the stop depending on how hard you're pushing down. I sent an email to Jarvi and was told this is normal and that most people set their hard stop just a little bit past zero and then cut to zero. This does not seem like a hard stop way of using the machine, but this is also my first machine and I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing most of the time. So I think I'm using my machine as a "soft stop" based on the recommendation above. I slowly cut to zero for the first few cuts and then do everything else by eye after that (if it makes sense). I'll be interested in hearing your thoughts after you get your machine back.

I am not a facetor but work with machining that deal with tooling work flexing all the time. When you are working with such precision equipment it is amazing how little force applied can cause flexure in a tool. As said I am not a facetor so it led me to do a little research here is a dicussion that I think may applicable to your situation. usfacetersguild.org/forums/topic/faceting-machine-mast-flex/

thanks for that article, im also starting to push down on the stone itself when grinding, it may help in keeping from loosing a stone from the wax letting go too. dave, I will give a full report after I cut a stone with the new dial indicator installed. I hope its money well spent. $500 doesn't come too easy for some of us.

yesterday I received my facetron machines head back from jarvi tool co. after the rebuild and addition of the dial indicator. It took 4 weeks and 2 days to send it to California for the modification and back. It looks like a new one and operates like one too. everything turns very smoothly and looks like every knob has been replaced. The dial indicator gauge works well and I stated faceting a stone today for the U.S. faceters guild novice competion. the new gauge will make cutting in the rough stages of the facets much quicker. So all and all im very satisfied with it .
