We have a beach here called Jasper Beach in downeast Maine (actually Machiasport). The rocks are actually rhyolite but they look like a reddish jasper. Here is a picture of a batch we picked up from the beach. Luckyduck (my wife) and I collected these and we haven't put them through the tumbler, this is how they look directly from the beach: Here's the beach (certainly no shortage of rocks here ): You can read more about the location here: www.state.me.us/doc/nrimc/mgs/sites-2000/jun00.htmEnjoy!

And I thought I had found a treasure in my kitchen. That is quite a find. My sister may be disabled but she is able to walk around and has a great eye for finding rocks. I think I am going to have to take her rock hunting with me. She loves to do that. Tami

Thewiz - They look almost the same wet, not much shinier than that pic. I'm thinking that polishing them will take some of the pits out and shine them up just a touch more, give me six weeks or so and I'll post the results.

Some of the Rhyolite that I've done has pits no matter how much I polish. Most of my is more red though.
