I don't recall seeing a picture of your leopard skins. I would really like to see what they look like. If you don't want to post, maybe an email or a PM? Once again, I really like your Unakites! Ron

The third picture has a near perfectly heart shaped stone in the upper right. That would make a pretty pendant. In fact, several of them are heart shaped but that one is really pree-ty! ;D

Alright Kim!!! Beautiful job on them! Perfect shape and shine. Really pretty rocks nicely done. I know what you mean about the pics, they look so nice in person, then they lose something in the picture. It happens to all of us, shiny rock pics are a real challenge, you did a fantastic job with those, cheers, Don

ron here are those leopard skins. these turned out the best but the ones that shine will have a spot or two that seems to have no polish and the others are a dull polish and these seem to have lost their spots and are no longer smooth with the areas that didn't shine actually being a level below the areas that shined (and this is the majority) the spots apparently don't go all the way through! i think they were smoother before the 60/90 ;D i know how banjo felt with those ryolites now! kim p.s. i'm dying now to know how to do these. got to be a way.

Hey Kim, the undercutting is a result of the rock being composed of two different hardnesses. The part that undercut is softer than the higher material. In that case, the softer material won't polish. And you're right, the 60/90 stage will start making the rocks rougher, not smoother, because the undercutting starts right away. The only luck I have had with these, and it hasn't been very good, was to hand grind each rock to get a smooth flat surface. I then put them into tumble starting at the pre-polish phase and watch them VERY close. I've not gotten them perfect, but at least passable. I don't have a vibratory tumbler, but it would seem to me that they might be able to do a better job with that type of rock. One last thing. I deal with that problem fairly often because I collect all of my rocks myself so I try to tumble a lot of oddball rock. It seems like a rock shop that is selling rock would state that the rock was not well suited to tumbling. I can see why you tried them, they are an attractive rock.
Ron
ps. When you hand grind them, you have to finish them with a fine wheel or the scratches will be too deep.

they are sold at several places as tumbling rock and one place says "takes a good polish". so it makes me think i did something wrong - like putting them in with the unakite. at some point i'm probably going to get some more rough and try this one all over again. i do think i'd like to get a vibe before that. maybe even cut some open and see how far those "spots" go into the rock before starting. i had a beautiful blue piece last time i looked at them in the barrel and the blue is gone - i'm sure the piece is still there but it is no longer blue. i searched images of this stone and especially since i know what i'm looking for it looks to me like other people are getting the same thing. if you could have seen how beautiful they were in 60/90 when they were tumbling without the unakites. but i don't think it was just that looking at other peoples pictures. hmmmmmmmmm kim
