I bet cedar shingles, flipped back side up, would work great.

Sandsman, I used cedar shingles that my son-in-law had pulled off off of a house that he is remodeling. Yeah, they were definitely weathered, but I tried to sand off all the weathered part. I REALLY don't like to sand stuff, but I bet I could buy some kind of 1/4" cedar material new that wouldn't require much sanding. I'll have to check into that. But not anytime soon, cuz I still have a pile of the shingles that my son-in-law brought me.
Cedar is really easy to cut, and really easy to sand. And it's supposed to last 'forever'. And I like the smell of it.
When I used the finish, I just had the crosses laying on freezer paper on my kitchen counter. That's where the mess came from on the backs. I don't think that baking pans would help much and would probably be more expensive than freezer paper or wax paper. I only used freezer paper because I didn't have any regular wax paper.
You guys need to start asking around for weathered wood. Llana and I asked around here for weeks before we started finding any. Now my yard looks like a house (or two) blew up in it. We've got wood everywhere! Not all of it is stuff that we will use, but alot of it is!
Sandsman, please DON'T stop asking me questions. I love it! And I will do my best to answer them somewhat intelligently, even though I am 'blond'.

I've made a ton of birdhouses out of cedar fence posts. I think they were only a dollar two for a five or six foot length. If you worked it right, you could get a BUNCH of those crosses out of one fence post. They weren't finished, but they were probably smooth enough for this application, so I don't think you would have to do much sanding.
I really like the crosses. They turned out great!

Hi Trouthunter, Thanks! The crosses were fun. I really enjoyed doing them. Can't wait to get started on my next project. I just have to figure out what it's going to be! Llana and I also make birdhouses and feeders. We use weathered (scrounged) wood on those too. We're pretty lucky living in a small town where we know almost everyone. People around here have given us lots of wood that they had no use for that we use for our 'craft' projects. I haven't had to buy any wood for a long time. ;D Barbara

I was planning on doing some sort of mosaic, you know what they do with tiles, only with different colored rocks. Tami
