Ordering Galaxy Diamond wheels for my 8" Gem Maker and wondering if I should go 80 or 100 in addition to the 220??? Newbee dealing with jasper, agates, obsidian, tigers eye mainly and wanted opinions of some folks that have cut more cabs than me...…..and that's not hard to do With these and the wheels for my 6" Covington it will be a big investment (for me) and I don't want to get the wrong ones. Any other tips or opinions appreciated too----Thanks

There's not a lot of difference between 80 and 100, slightly deeper scratches and marginally quicker removal of material with the 80 but hardly noticable. Seeing you also have 220 go for the 80 I think.
After you have shaped your cab on the 80 or 100 give it a good working on the 220 to get the deep scratches out, those scratches really are deep and also make minor damage to the stone deeper than the scratches so make allowance for removing a bit more material on the 220. Let the diamonds do the work, just hold the stone against the wheel don't press hard and you will get better performance for longer from your wheel.
Sintered wheels are a better option than plated if you are doing a lot of work but are way expensive, out of most peoples league but last forever.

I vote for the 80 grit. I switched to 80 grit on my first wheel years ago and have never regretted it.

I don't see much benefit of a 100 over an 80. Back in the day, I would buy wheels on ebay that were deep discounted. I got a 6 inch 60 grit crystallite that I tried on my genie. My 8 inch star diamond machine requires quite a bit of disassembly to change wheels. I think I bought a 100 grit wheel once because it was cheap. My current set up is 80, 220 hard, 220, 600, 1200 nova. I would like to a 400 nova.

I bought a 60 grit sintered wheel from MoHan. He's on eBay as Lapidarytool & Amazon as Han's. I've been using it for 6 years or so & love it. I got 60 grit because they say get one grit coarser than the plated wheel you're used to. Lynn

pauls--where did you get your sintered wheels if I could ask? Thanks Same as Zarguy Hans Lapidary- lapidarytool.com/mall/lapidary-processing/lapidary-diamond-wheel/diamond-sintered-wheel.htmlI really treat it badly but it just keeps on going, a great investment. Freight is fairly expensive but you do get your package in about a week. I have worn plenty of plated wheels out, These sintered wheels have probably 20 times the work of a plated one and is hardly worn at all.
