I haven't posted any pics in a while and thought it was time I let you guys have a look at what I've been up to. I haven't been able to be real active on the board due to a lot of stuff going on. I've been real busy in the garden and other stuff too numerus to name but my oldest son is getting married September 18th and that has taken a lot of our time. Fortunatley the tumblers don't get preoccupied and just keep on rolling. I have been rolling mostly the pet wood that we collected in Falls City in the early summer but I throw a few strays in once in awhile. Here's a pic of some that I picked out of the mix that I thought you might like. A little closer. A litttle closer still. img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/bschultz/rocks2.jpgI've been tumbling now for about 4 1/2 months and I have around 12 lbs. of polished rock. What do you guys think? Is that a good, normal, or P#$$ poor yield. I know, It's quality not quantity, and if I pulled out all the non quality stones my quantity would go way down, but all lot of them will be given to the rock club to give away at our show to the kids and we need all we can get and the kids aren't real pickey. We have a "Wheel Of Furtune" type thing that they do to win rocks and they love it. (Everybody wins something). Hope to have another batch out in a few weeks. If I can I'll post picks. You guys take care. Bob

Hey Bob,
Looks great to me!
I am going to try my hand at it again with a big batch of a very wide variety of stones. With any luck they'll turn out as nice as this bunch.
Thanks for the pics!
John

Looks great to me. That greenish stripey rock is very captivating, what is that?! As for the yield, I can't really comment without knowing your set-up...ie, how many barrels you're running, and what size. Good going on the time you spend involving youth in the hobby.

First, those rocks look great. I have no idea about output, but, this is really interesting because you would swear that we collected these rocks at the same place very recently, because I just finished a bunch that look amazingly like these. I've been trying to figure out pet wood identification so your comment about this being largely pet wood is helpful -- that must mean that my guesses about the stuff I have are accurate.
I'm impressed with the surfaces that you and a couple other posters have achieved. I've never had a problem with the polish part. The issue for me is how far to grind them in hopes of getting the soft stuff that won't shine off of the surfaces, of course, along the way you risk losing the features of the rock that you liked starting out. I just speed-processed a batch through the vibe in 8 days flat. I picked up all this stuff on vacation and I just have to see some of it ASAP! So I've ended up with beautifully polished stones but almost every one has surface flaws of some sort and they are not shaped much at all. There's just too much irregularity and it detracts from the stones, plus, it makes my feeble identification skills even more useless. I'm going to put them in a barrel eventually and bite the bullet patience-wise, that's probably the reason you guys get the overall better surfaces.

Great looking batch of stones Bob, thanks for the pics.
Even with patience the stones can still be disappointing at times. But I still love them all and try for better once more. Never give up

I run my rough in a Model B and just pull out whatever looks like it can go to 120-220 until I get enough of that to go into a 6# barrel and keep playing round robin like that with my QT66. Rolling Stone, that green one is a favorite of mine too. I don't know what it is or where I got it. Anybody got any idea what this may be. Maybe later I'll post a pic of that one all by itself. Bob

alright bob you got me thinking here. i think i've gotten 8 loads through in 8 mos using 5 tumblers. they polish in a 6# barrell and probably really weigh about 4# by the time they reach polish. so 4x8=32 lbs in 8 mos with 5 tumblers hmmmmmmmm so you should have 12.8#'s with 2 tumblers in 4 mos . you're ok ;D. and those pics you posted give you a double ok . kim

WOW!! Way to go Rocky. You figured that out quick. I can see you now wearing one of those visers, a pencil behind your ears and pulling the lever on an adding machine. Ka-ching! That's 12.8 lbs.
