Thanks for the help. I thought some pieces looked like variscite in color and pattern and might be from the tortoise mine. I, however, have no clue where the material is from. Most of the pieces were chalky on the outside, some were round but most were flat. The material is hard and does polish fairly well. The pattern and color are what interested me in the first place.

1dave, Great thread. Any hints on how to distinguish chalchosiderite from both variscite and turquoise with standard gemological instruments (spectroscope, R.I., S.G., microscope, dichroscope etc.?) I have some great spiderweb material mined from near the No. 8 turquoise location but don't know what to call it. I've tried the spectroscope but even the iron line in turquoise is very difficult to see without advanced lab equipment. Oh for the lack of cash! Back in the day I was introduced to the owners of the Darling Darlene mine and had the opportunity to buy some of their best material. But my beer budget in those days couldn't afford even the very reasonable prices they were asking for their champagne quality. Just one of several great opportunities lost to being born poor.

Yes, if we only knew. Sorry, I'm getting to the age where I can't remember what I knew a half hour ago.
