Lots of creative thinking this month, a great competition. I finally remembered something I'd tucked away to cut "someday," and decided it might be just right for this competition. I plain forgot to photograph the rough so the first image is my slightly lumpy free-formed "Christmas tree." It's cut from a fairly rare type of drusy green garnet from Siberia, Russia. It's named Uvarovite garnet honoring a Russian count, and forms on black chromite as tiny crystals. It's the chromium garnet, as the occurrence with chromite would suggest. The crystals are almost always too small to yield faceted gems but the few small cut stones I've seen are stunners. Lumpy Preform Finished With Polished Edges and Back Side View with Chromite HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

So many great Christmas themed cabs in this contest!
I hope it's okay to offer up a small box of slabbets and preforms to the winner of this month's contest.
Best part.. there's still a few days left to enter!

Oh, what the hey! There are some out there that kick serious butt. I can't compete with those, but in the spirit of fun, here's my submission -- a bloodstone cab that was remade from an old one, when I was a little too free in my freeforming (mainly because grinding away rock just absolutely killed me): DSC_1450_Bloodstone by Stephan Telm, on Flickr And here's the "slab" (aka the old cab): Bloodstone freeform by Stephan Telm, on Flickr

stephan Nice remake. I entered all in fun, too. Cannot wait to see all of the entries in one batch. I think all aspects of Christmas/winter will be covered.

Well just finished mine today and I'm going to get photos tomarrow... Also I'm thinking to help promote our growth in creativity and learning with the FCC that to start the new year we issue ourselves a personal challenge that we stick to for contests unless the theme says otherwise... like me I tend to make lots of green caps so I'd say no more green cabs lol, could also be freeform only, or something like you want to perfect getting the scratches out if your struggling in that... can be anything... it's also your personal challenge so it won't be policed but breaking your rule I'd have to live with.. for eternity ☺ what ya think, am I just going crazy or ya think this would be a cool overall theme for the new year and contests to follow?

Nice! Reminds me of Rainforest jasper, which I've always called "mini-thundereggs."

Nice! Reminds me of Rainforest jasper, which I've always called "mini-thundereggs." Similar but ours comes in many different colors... but the red yellow orange and black stuff that everyone on here wants I'm still having a hard time finding.
