January Fun Cab Challenge This is a challenge to yourself... What is the best cab that you can create... posting the results of your creation whatever the outcome (just because the cab may not be the best please post anyway and if you like ask for feedback to improve).
To start off with the new year lets hear your "resolution" for making cabs throughout the contests or year in your post (unless theme demand to break resolution) for instance no scratches, no flat spots, no ordinary shapes, no green cabs, anything can go. your resolution will not be taken into voting, but just make this year more interesting.
Theme- chosen by prior month's winner MsAli theme for this month is Winter- any material as long as it is white/clear or has "winter scene"Rules: All hand made cabbing techniques may be used. Cabs entered must be hand shaped (can be finished in a tumbler but please note if so) and be completed by the last minute of the month in your timezone. They can be started before the month but only finished during the month. You must have 1 photo of ether a preform or slab of the rock. You can enter 1 cab with a up to 3 individual finished piece (not combined) photos of the cab, 2 extra photos will allocated for stones that have color play due to light or fluorescence or equivalent special characteristics (not polish). 1 of the 3 normal photos will be used for voting and if your stone has special characteristics 1 photo from that as well. Please note which photo you would like to use for voting. Voting is a fun way to see what cab folks like the most. Before voting you can change your photos or improve your cab (rework spots especially if you are asking for advice) and place new photos in your original post replacing old photos by the deadline. Please tell an approximation measurement of the legnth / width of the cab. Finished jewelry cabs may not be entered (unless otherwise specified by the theme). It is OK if there is a hole drilled in the cab without a jump ring, as long as there is no extras on the rock (wire, chord, etc.) All entries submitted to this contest must be unique to this competition (not submitted in several different competitions). Any duplicates will not be included in the voting list. Feel free to share with us the story behind your workings or material. Also, don't forget to include the name of the material. If a tie occurs in the voting the breaker will be whoever submitted the finished item first. If there are any questions feel free to ask. Beginners to old timers are welcome. If you would like feedback (constructive criticism) ask for folks to pm you if they wish to offer tips. If you are new and think your cab isn't too good but its the best you can do post it anyway, getting feedback is how i got to where i am now! Winner is allowed to chose theme for the month following voting.

Perfect theme for January. My resolution is to use the Dremel for more pre-shaping prior to tumbling cabs.

My resolution is no flat spots and try to make a circle Ok. Why are "flat spots" so un-desirable? For my preforms, I almost always leave a flat spot. It gets a high polish, and the folks who buy them apparently aren't bother by the "flat spot" Would like to do circles. They will happen if I get the old Craftsman Drill Press with my name on it. Also hope to implement a re-designed FL-20 Vib Lap with indirect drive later this year. Once the proto-type is built and tested, will convert a second machine. ....And take pictures worth posting!!!

While some may intentionally may have a flat spot, if you run your finger over the surface you will not feel any bumps which are created by flat spots. Its ether fully domed or domed to a flat surface without having a noticeable edge leading to the flat area. Think of a frisbee, it has no flat spots on top even though the top may be flat or fully domed.

Mine are alway right in the center of the dome Maybe its fear of getting my fingers nipped

I thought flat spots indicated the cab was held in the same place too long.
You gotta be quick!

My trouble area for flat spots was small ones at the transition from the perimeter to the top. Moving quickly like Pat says and getting all the way across when doming it solved that. Centered flat tops are fine when they're intentional, with some materials you lose a picture or chatoyance if you don't go with a flat top. My personal resolution is more cabbing, seems like in 2018 I probably cut a couple dozen tops, been so focused on equipment, slabbing, and household remodel stuff, oh yeah and too much internet.

Thanks everyone for the tips I know I'm not rolling it smoothly and quickly across the dome So that's what I need to work on Maybe actually using the dop stick would help with that?

My resolution is... STOP BUYING ROCKS and thin out the herd I have. Honestly, I've been so addicted to buying/finding/cutting nice slabs that I could literally not buy a single rock this year and probably not make a dent in my preform inventory. In addition to a personal resolution, this is also a financial strategy for the year to come after the big move this month. My entry is a piece of Linda Marie plume agate that I bought last year in Quartzsite. I thought at the time how much it looked like a winter snow in the forest scene so it was my first thought when I read the the new theme.

My resolution is to enter the cab contest every month (which will force me to keep cabbing consistently). I also have had too many house (and gardening) time suckers this last year and want to get back to my hobbies. Also, to cut and make at least one cab from every slab I cut or buy this year, rather than sticking them all in the cupboards to "save for later".

You could throw come up for prizes if you want, we haven't had a physical prize in a while. We had a physical prize last month contest that just ended thanks to incredible Mr. beefjello but yes I will definitely do that once I get settled into the new place in a few weeks and get stuff sorted out. Everything that isn't tied down in my current shop has already been moved over to the new place.

My New Year's resolution will be to cut a damn heart this year. I have yet to do one, mostly because I just don't like heart shapes- over done. But, I do need to accomplish one. Also, I resolve to enter a couple contests. And, to cab more often (which will mean telling my daughter she can not "just drop by"). Tommy, your cab is perfect! I definitely see/feel winter with that one.

I think this is a cool theme for this month, so I knocked out a cab tonight for the contest. Finished size is 2" wide, 1.5" high. I've got to say for a resolution I'd like to do more smithing. I sure need the practice! here's the slab, a 1 cab wonder Here's the finished cab - reminds me of a snowstorm my wife & I experienced in Colorado in May of '96 when we were trying to drive up to Durango
