I think this is a cool theme for this month, so I knocked out a cab tonight for the contest. Finished size is 2" wide, 1.5" high. I've got to say for a resolution I'd like to do more smithing. I sure need the practice! here's the slab, a 1 cab wonder Here's the finished cab - reminds me of a snowstorm my wife & I experienced in Colorado in May of '96 when we were trying to drive up to Durango Love this! It's like a snow capped mountain

I remember that blizzard we got snow drifts that covered some houses here. Kids where jumping off the second story balconies of my neighbors my kids where 1 and 2 back then. Memories thanks.

We get that a lot here. A thunderstorm with snow. Nice cab and very evocative.

I have some perfect "winter" Willow Creek Jasper but I've used it in previous contests and don't want to repeat. I'm still searching for the "right" piece of rough but I'm not having much luck so far. But I know there's probably something somewhere in my rock pile.
My New Years resolution is like Tommy's -- focus on cutting what material I have rather than buying trendy new stuff. But like most resolutions, I may succumb to temptation along the way.
The entries so far will be tough to beat.

My resolution is... STOP BUYING ROCKS and thin out the herd I have. Honestly, I've been so addicted to buying/finding/cutting nice slabs that I could literally not buy a single rock this year and probably not make a dent in my preform inventory. In addition to a personal resolution, this is also a financial strategy for the year to come after the big move this month. My entry is a piece of Linda Marie plume agate that I bought last year in Quartzsite. I thought at the time how much it looked like a winter snow in the forest scene so it was my first thought when I read the the new theme. Aw, Jiminy Christmas, Tommy. Here we go again... the bar set at about 20 feet, and no pole in sight. That is freakin' spectacular!

January Fun Cab Challenge Theme- chosen by prior month's winner MsAli theme for this month is Winter- any material as long as it is white/clear or has "winter scene"Just for the record... in much of California, Winter is when we transition from brown to green. There isn't really a whole lot of white going on (unless you follow the herd into the mountains). As for my resolution: if I don't enjoy it, don't do it. That includes making shapes I don't like, or working with rocks I don't like. I'll try for some stretching in terms of what freeforms I make, but no ovals or circles.

Or maybe I’ll make good on my “California winter” idea. Wish I had some snowflake obsidian. I guess we’ll have to see. I have plenty of time to be indecisive.

Ok, I'll play. Thanks MsAli for pointing out that this cab would fit in well for the January 2019 fcc theme. Yikes though...the other cabs already entered are SUPER cool!!
Anyway, starting today, since I picked a couple more slabs on ebay yesterday, my New Year's resolution is to buy fewer rocks and spend more time outside looking for them.
This entry is my Jan. 1 2019 disappointment...some 'blue' agate that my son and I mined this past summer turns out not to be blue at all, it's an illusion! But it's white for winter and here it is:
