Yes, parfive, absolutely fascinating to read about the gold rushes, be it in America, Australia or elsewhere. To see the dredges and gold operations on the way to Dawson from Anchorage was an eye opener. Always reckon I was born 100 years too late.

For the uninitiated like myself until I did some research, the capacitor on the Genie is a run capacitor. There are two types of capacitors, Start and Run. The Start capacitor gives the motor a bolt of energy in order to get it up and running. The Run capacitor is used to continuously adjust current or phase shift to a motor’s windings in an effort to optimise the motors torque and efficiency performance. Replacement capacitors should have the same specs as that the manufacturer put on it otherwise you may stuff the motor.
Ya learn something every day, dontcha

The Genie motors do run hot - but not so hot you can't lay your hand on the housing. Maybe not comfortably, or for very long, but when the capacitors go they will blister your fingers and boil water. Had that experience after buying mine second-hand years ago.

IT'S DONE and fixed. I bought a 2MDV5 capacitor from the Graingers store nearby, replaced the old one and lo and behold, just like everyone said, the Genie motor now runs at a normal temperature. Took very little time, about the time it takes to make a cuppa and drink it.
Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks. But, then again, SWMBO has me now running around in circles and jumping through hoops which I never did before.
Thank you one and all, RTH has come to the rescue again. Now, next job, replace the motor on my Raytech 10' saw which gave up the ghost. I have 3 motors laying about somewhere. Then there is the brush roller on the vacuum cleaner which needs pulling apart and de-linting. Oh, also the bathroom needs painting. Never a dull moment once you retire, busier now than when I worked full time.

It could be worse - what if you didn't have such a fun hobby?

I picked up one of these from Ebay. 10.00 delivered and I got it in 2 days (I live in the middle of nowhere so the closest Grainger store is 90 miles). Thank you for the info! My 1983 Genie runs quite hot, won't burn skin but will make steam if you wet the top. I hope it will run a bit cooler now.
