Made an unplanned hounding trip yesterday (the best kind ) to Railroad Buttes in South Dakota yesterday so I thought I'd share some scenery pics. Around 100 degrees, lots of mosquitoes and deerflies...but also a ton of bubblegum, water, lace and prairie agates- and more wood than a person could carry out. I also found a few nice pieces of horn coral, I'll post some pics of that stuff in a bit. The pastures are FULL of clover this year. In fact, there are people from California leasing land for bees and there are boxes everywhere. Some of the local producers don't like it from what I've heard. There are no regulations and they're afraid of their bees getting diseases and/or relocating to a different hive. Maybe the bees from California party harder than the bees from Nebraska. Anyway, here's some photos from where we hounded....

We are suffering a heatwave and it wouldn't surprise me if stuff starts dying back.

I love the way it is now... Hard to see the rocks and snakes, though.

Thanks for sharing your pictures. It looks so nice and serene. A perfect place to hound, except for the snakes, of course. Deerflies suck, too. Does bug spray keep them off you? I remember getting bit by a deerfly when I was fishing in Minnesota when I was a kid. I had a fish on the line, so that bugger got me bleeding good (literally).

It is very serene- there's just something about being out there away from everything that I really enjoy. We hardly ever see another soul besides the occasional antelope and a snake or two. Bug spray helps some with the deerflies. More importantly, did you get the fish?

Heck yeah, I got the fish. Wasn't gonna let that one go just because a bug was chomping on my leg.

California has to scatter the beehives around a lot because there are so many hives. They are starting to keep a lot of them here over the winter now because shipping the hives all over really stresses them out. In February and March, they have to have enough bees to pollinate 1,000,000 acres of almond trees. In our area (south East of Sacramento) they are plowing up seasonal pasture in the rolling hills of the Gold Country to plant more almond trees. They are planting about 50 to 60 thousand acres of new trees every year. It may slow down a bit with the tariffs on China causing them to not buy as many almonds as usual. Bob
