Restless. Building arriving in 4 days with crew to erect it. Lots to think about. Excited but concerned.

Mom and dad are around. Reason I came back. Gonna freeze my off Hey, my sister moved and stayed out west. Dodged the take-care-of-parents duty. It was a most rewarding thing I ever did. But it about broke me. Thank God for my giving wife's assistance. Be proud Alison. They will need you. Warm clothes ? This has been a real eye opener at how bad things have become. Ive been here a little over a month and mom has been in the hospital twice already Dad just stubborn and refuses to see a doctor, so Ive been gettting the yard winter ready and Im not even winter ready myself. I wont regret the time I have with them though. Even though I miss the heck out of my kid and friends. I had a uncle that wore something like that

It seems like you blink your eyes and all the sudden their world has changed drastically. Us 'kids' share hardships with parents. They often hide theirs MsAli.

Welcome back, jamesp! You've been missed around here. Knew you were working on the new place, but dang. It looks great!
...Noticed a few of the knappers have started making glass. So far I think I have them out done. But they are improving constantly. Their problem is paying retail prices for this expensive fusible glass. James, they also get a lot of glass in bars from China. Have seen it being sold and know that it's imported.

...Noticed a few of the knappers have started making glass. So far I think I have them out done. But they are improving constantly. Their problem is paying retail prices for this expensive fusible glass. James, they also get a lot of glass in bars from China. Have seen it being sold and know that it's imported. Funny thing, this big stash of fusible glass I found in a warehouse is Chinese glass Rick. It was rejected by US artisans because many of the colors would not fuse polish. End result was a dull or matte finished vase or bowl after cooling. However it cast well into bricks when many colors are mixed together without cracking. There are additives that allows glass to cast well, and additives to help with a polished surface after fusion. This glass is stable in thick bricks making it perfect for knapping and tumbling. If memory serves, a some Chinese entrepreneurs paid an American fusible glass expert to teach them how to make this fusible art glass. The venture was an expensive failure when marketed here in the states because of the reason mentioned above. I had melted many Chinese vases. From a fusing position China makes some incredible glass. China historically was making glass a long time. Probably before Italy started. Hard to say what their 'magic' recipes are or what ingredients they use in their glass. For instance they may have access to mines with super high quality silica. I know for a fact they use highly poisonous coloring agents that were outlawed for melting by the EPA here in the states(Spectrum glass in Oregon). Not a problem, once cast into the glass these poisonous materials were harmless, but the initial melting process was dangerous. And these poisonous materials make some of the richest colors and user friendly fusible glass.

I've knapped a point or two before that were made of old green glass from the 1930's. Point a LW black light at it and it glowed a bright green - uranium salts added to make the color stand-out bright and shiny. Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread.

A wide range of additives have been added to glass over many years creating so many colors and effects. Early Italian families held various secret recipes for coloring glass. They could be considered chemists. The subject is an interesting one.

Building arrived yesterday. 5 hours unloading, 2 hours to put up the columns. Rained out Wed. Thurs. They had me bring steel in using the ATV because of tight access along side of existing building. Truckers nervous on getting back here with long trailers. I told them to limit trailers to 30 feet length. These are 40 feet. Note 2 footers at lower half of photo. And the two columns closest. For an 18' x 28' open air lean-to shoe horned between buildings. To be closed in and connect to new building at later date. Hope it fits !!

It would be really interesting to read the dog's mind....."what in the world is this guy up to now!!!" Looks like a pretty tight fit. In East Texas they call that a "Beat to fit, paint to match" opportunity

In East Texas they call that a "Beat to fit, paint to match" opportunity That old hound will sit next to me when welding and grinding. Acclimated to the noises. She is food shopping leftover contractor bag lunches. It helps my wife show the dogs in the noisy dog ring because our dogs are used to noises. Hope no 'beating to fit' is required. It was a task to follow the dimensions up from the base plate at concrete up to the edge of the eave to have clearance between new and old building. They never provided an overall dimension. First thought about 4 inches clearance, got nervous and increased to 8 inches. Must be a chicken.

Shoehorned a 28'x18' lean-to between the two buildings. I lost sleep worrying about getting all the anchor bolts located for the concrete, no room for error. Not my bailiwick ! Note wind column assembly at right; it's footer was poured in a 4'x3' steel tank, took 5600 pounds of concrete. Nonconventional, sorta baffled the steel building company ARCO. Their engineer will be glad to be done with me lol. After learning about all of ARCO's options on this building the mountain cabin was designed with yet more challenging design features. Again, that ARCO engineer will be glad when I am out of his life.

Old age won't slow you down. Here is the southeast corner of my property bought in 2000. Last week we finally finished it. All that work, and it only took me 19 years!

You started when you were in your teens 1dave !! You guys don't have grass. Makes for perfect rock hunting. The erectors ran into a problem, the flange bolt hole pattern for the lean-to rafters are not the same as the receiver bolt hole pattern on the main building by 2 holes each flange. Metal building maker's problem but the erectors are going to have to take them back down to do the fix according to the metal building company. I offered to simply torch 2 holes in each 4 bolt pattern to make them equal. Their quality control department is discussing it. The 2 rafters in the next post here.

4 bolt holes did not line up on each these 2 lean-to rafters. Metal building company made a booboo. Probably going to have to take them back down.

10 days after alpha day. Building $23,000, erection $12,000, slab $7800. The rest can be completed under roof. Only one story, no attic or 2nd floor.
