Started my rough grind Jan. 10 and ran until April 30, checked about every 14 days. Switched to 220 for 2 weeks then to the vibe and AO1200. AO1200 ran 3 days then 2 days in TXP. Have 6 that are pretty decent and not many pits, need to get 5 them in the mail before the calendar catches me.

Have had boatloads of trouble with the process this year, down to only 7 in the polish as everything else was too flawed... had to take out one of my favorites as part of one side opened up rough in the pre-polish (but the other side has a nice polish, ha). Hoping I can get a decent polish on 5 of the ones left. I wish there was a wild-card ribbon randomly chosen from among the non-winning entries... a kind of perseverance award. "Hey, your rocks may look like crap, but at least you're not a quitter!"

Boy, can I relate. After one month I realized all my pieces were trash and I threw them away! I got another batch though, and persevered. Maybe...just maybe...5 pieces might be keepers to submit. They finish their 2nd week in alum ox tonight so I'm really cutting it close on the deadline! Last year's rhodonite about drove me nuts. The super hard jasper the year before that is only now finally almost ready for polish! That stuff was some of the hardest material I've ever tumbled.

Well, here goes. I kept grinding and grinding and finally realized there is no way to stop those internal voids and pits from arising over and over. So, these are small, but I'm sheepishly sending them in and so tired of seeing them in my tumblers! I had two big pieces that I had high hopes for, but polish fractures I hadn't seen so I'm afraid to send those in. I don't have stopping at the Lavic field high on my todo list now. However, I have found some nice stuff around Baker and Ludlow and nearby. This has been torture. I even drove around on my honeymoon July 30 to Aug 9 with a Lortone Q66 rumbling away in the back of my 4Runner with barrels in polish to try to eke out a submission at last minute before deadline! Carried the dang thing into all the motels and hotels too which was not fun. Believe it or not you can fall asleep to the swishing sound of a rather full 6lb rubber barrel in polish with not too many rocks and a lot of plastic beads. I just uploaded a pic in what is called a Quick Reply. Hope it works.

Did you click on the "Click for more info" link and follow the instructions to set up your Cloudinary account? That's the only way it will work.

Bob, I hear you! I'm not about to take the next plane out to California to find the source material. I just sent mine out this afternoon. There was one in the bunch that might be prize-worthy, so pleasing to the eye and to the hand. One other has a great polish except where it is pitted. The others were, um, OK. At least they actually polished! I consider it a victory that I got them out at all!

Well, too late of course but only now do I have some REALLY nice pieces coming out of 220 and 600! At least I can keep them for myself! One is maybe 1.5". That about 3x bigger than my submissions.

Update 2020 Rock Tumbling Contest. It sounds like fires are once again giving the Feather River rock club problems.
Hope link works.

Update: October 5, 2020
The Feather River Lapidary & Mineral Society, Inc. would like to congratulate the top 3 winners of our contest.
1st place winner: JOSEPH BLANCHARD OF IL.
2nd place winner: Bob Davis of M.I.
3rd place winner: Chuck Martin of MI.
I want to first thank all the contestants for being so patient with us. 2020 has been a tough year for many of us, especially with the Northern California fires once again. Four of the five judges were forced out of their homes while in the middle of judging the stones. Some were out of their house for 20 days! Luckily they are all back in their homes and the stones made it back to me safely. No photos yet of the stones.
I would like to thank the five judges for this year’s contest: Tom, Suzy, Bruce, Carol and Jesse. Awesome job!
There were only 3 points difference between the top 3 winners. Following is the point system we use to judge your work. Points are 1 (pour) to 5 (excellent) for a total of 30 points. What we judge on is 1/Finish, 2/Chips 3/Polish 4/Grinding marks and 5/Overall appearance. We then average all five judges scores for the total points of 150.
Joseph was our first contestant that scored 5 points across the board for a total of 150 points. Bob scored 148 points and Chuck scored 147. Very close contest this year. Great job to the three of you! The remaining 24 entries ranged in points from 143 to 87.
We hope that you will join in the 2021 contest starting January 1. Cost will once again be $35.00. I believe the stone will be Burris Creek Jasper. Due to Covid-19 our travelling has been limited greatly this year. We hope that you are staying safe and healthy in these trying times. Now go out and brag about your accomplishments with the tumbling contest this year. You all deserve it!
Sincerely,
Lori Millard, FRLMS Inc Tumbling Chair

Am I a fool for thinking that after this, and rhodonite last year, next year might be semi-normal material?

Am I a fool for thinking that after this, and rhodonite last year, next year might be semi-normal material? Burris creek jasper does not have a whole lot of ready examples online to start looking at.
