This could as easily gone in the wirewrapping section. Applies to both.
I am really funny about making earrings. They have to be pretty light and can't be too wire fussy so as not to get caught in the hair. But, I just got some nice Sumatra agates and 2 largeish stones would make a beautiful earring pair. They weigh about 9 grams each. What do y'all think? Too heavy? I can simply drill a hole if needed.

I just weighed one of the boulder opals that I posted a while back and it's 6.5 grams. I think 6.5g is light enough to set in silver in a bezel with a 26 gauge backplate that's about half open. I think that will push my earring weight a little beyond that of your agates, so judicious wrapping sounds OK to me. Disclaimer: I don't wear earrings.

Thanks, that was helpful.

How thick are the stones, Tela? You could always take a bit off the backs if they're thick enough.

A lot depends on personal preference. The other day, I had a customer who was wearing thick cab earrings. They were about 1" long. Am guessing those were pretty heavy.

As fernwood said, a lot depends on personal preference. I tend to like smaller sizes. The stone earrings I frequently wear weigh between 5.5 grams and 6.7 grams, fully finished for the pair. If they get much lighter than 5 grams with fish hooks they are really easy to lose. I have a pair that weigh in at 12.3 grams. They seem heavy to start with, but after a while I'm not so aware of the weight, just the extra length. For those who like bigger I think you will be fine. I have several customers who won't buy if "they can't see them." No 6mm studs for them! lol I haven't weighed their pieces but I'm sure they would be comfortable with the weight that you have.
