The votes are in and crazy lace was the winner! I think it's a good choice. Week 0: 1380g - Going into 46/70 SiC with a shot of kitty litter and a pile of smaller self-collected quartz. I think next week's clean-out is going to be very exciting. This outer layer will be peeled away and we'll get a better glimpse into the patterns that lie beneath.

Week 1: 46/70 SiC. 1335g. Running total mass loss: 3.3% I think this bottom side may end up being the star of the show. A fair bit of the scab is off... still needs a bit more ground off to really tell what all patterns are there. I am seeing spots of porous looking material in a couple places. Maybe more grinding will get past them, we'll see. I'm digging this a lot. I'm glad to have gotten a chunk that has a bunch of red in the banding. I have a smaller one I did a while back that's mostly milky white, so this is cool.

Week 2: 46/70 SiC. Recharge at 3 days with 36 Sic. 1279g. Running total mass loss: 7.3% Yea going from 46/70 down to 36 probably doesn't make a ton of sense out of nowhere. This got the bulk of what I had left of the 46/70, TE got the last little bit. 25 lb of 36 SiC came in, and this thing still needs a ton of grinding. I don't have a really good way to do grit recovery until the snow goes away... There was a little still in there, given only 4 days since recharge I don't think that's too crazy. Thing is, over at therockshed, the 36, 46/70, 60/90, and 120/220 SiC are the same price per pound. Given what I'm doing with these large stones, if it doesn't cost me extra to get more grinding power, I'll take it. For reals, a lot of what jamesp has been saying, and past threads even, is sinking in. Picked up a masonry disk for my 4" angle grinder. Need to come up with a decent way to clamp/hold big stones. Next time some preshaping is in order. Landlords were cool with me going on the other side of the back fence to break rock. Took a bunch of big white quartz chunks and broke them down to keep the barrels supplied. Liking the look of this material over the grungy stuff I've been picking up everywhere. { Shoutout to anyone new to breaking rock: Proper PPE! Boots, pants, long sleeve shirt, gloves, safety glasses - face shield even better. Shards are no joke and even sting through the clothing }Figure I'll probably keep a pile of "less desirable" material that's gone through the process with these big rocks and use it to fill out the barrels from stage 2 through polish. Rocks pulled from stage 1 to move forward are getting further separated into "pretty" and "meh". Pretties go into small barrels, mehs help push the big rock along. Rocks these size aren't friendly to the small material even though they themselves appear to come out unscathed. Need to talk to Newton about his 3rd law, spidey sense is tingling.

Week 3: 36 SiC. 1245g. Running total mass loss: 9.8% Didn't do a recharge on this, busy work week. My goodness... This set it and forget it for a week is bonkers with this thing. Anyone want a recipe for gray cake batter?

Wow! How much water was in there? Filled to the bottom of the top layer of rocks. Laser eyeball maybe 1/2 or so of the barrel itself. Didn't find any grit in the rinse tub. These Lortone folks certainly made a monster of a grinding machine with this 12 lb barrel. It's a decagon on the inside. So, it has to make a complete 360 in 10 faces. So 36 degrees off of 180 to make a turn. That puts the barrel faces 144 degrees apart.

I agree with Pat, this is very interesting. Such cool patterns and it changes every week.

This is going to be a beauty!! I have enjoyed watching the progress and I'm really tempted to get a bigger barrel and try also!

Cool project! What are you using for filler? How big are the filler rocks?

Cool project! What are you using for filler? How big are the filler rocks? I'm using quartz pieces I've found. They range from pea sized to about 3/4". It's a bit of a mind bender with these big stones. They burn through rough stock like crazy.

Thanks, that's about the size I would have used. It looks like it's working well.

Week 5: 36 SiC. 1170g. Running total mass loss: 15.2% Going for another week in coarse, probably more. Hard to tell here, but it is progressing. I recently stumbled upon johnw's thread where he was partway through a large crazy lace when he passed away. I hope my updates doing a similar stone of this type, updating its progress similar to what he was doing around a year ago, isn't stepping on anyone's feelings. Cheers
