We have had the same provider for nearly 20 years. It is DSL, but we are a block from the hub, so we have a great connection. We were grandfathered in at a nice price, too. Sadly, they are closing up in VA, which basically leaves us with FIOS. Not so sure about that myself. Never liked Verizon, but maybe they have improved.
We have a landline- yes, I know- how quaint. We don't have or want cell phones. With FIOS, we have to get VOIP. I don't know if I like that, either.
Anyone have FIOS or VOIP? What are your thoughts?

VoIP won't be as stable long term as an old copper line, though it's pretty close these days, but there's no getting around the fact that if your Internet is down so is your phone. In our area, Verizon sold its FIOS business to another company. While I don't have it myself, we support clients (IT business) using it and the service is solid, the new company's customer service not so much. I'd compare to Comcast if they're an option, from my experience supporting many clients it's six of one / half dozen of another, either should work as well as the other so I'd shop on price, contract requirements/terms and any "extras" they try to throw in.

We have Cox and Verizon. They, apparently, have a "gentlmen's agreement" about service in our area. I really don't have a choice. It's Fios or no internet. But, there was no contract or anything. No freebies, either, unless I want Disney and inet TV. Don't want either. Oh, and installation was free. We should be set up on the 20th. Guess I'll see how good it is.
Fios wanted to sell me a back up battery for the phone. If the power goes out, we won't have a phone. I have several large battery packs. I'm gonna see if I can use one of those. We always hook up the router to a battery pack when we lose power.

Make sure they have a battery backup on their networking equipment too, when they bring the fiber to your house, otherwise the other battery backups wont' do much other than keep the pretty little lights blinking. I'm assuming they'll do that as a matter of install procedure, but you know what they say about "assume" There's always someone with a horror story for just about any service out there but I'm sure you'll be fine and things will work well!

We had to get cable when the digital broadcast thing came in, air signal quit. We had Verizon FIOS T.V, phone, and internet package then it was bought out by Frontier. Don't have any complaints about either, Comcrap here has a horrible reputation. We had a couple problems that were fixed promptly and on schedule with Verizon. The one thing that griped us is the cable box and our recorder have a software incompatibility, can't record anything and don't want to enough to pay the $10/mo for DVR. We have land line phone too, by choice, but elect. co-op here is very dependable to have power on.
