Oh, I forgot one.
I got a bag of agates, but some of them are cracked oben, like this: Can/should these still be tumbled?

you can pour epoxy in the cavity then dissolve it out when done that will keep the grit from stacking up inside. the cavity will fill up with grit and fine rocks and mud. It will be hard to clean.

I believe silicon will work also. In my last batch I had some small glass beads with the ceramics in the vibe. A couple of pendant style rocks with holes predrilled. I was Amazed how tightly the small glass stuck in the pendant holes. No way to get it out with my fingernail. Had to poke at it from the other side with a dremel bit.

When I get one like that, I just pull it out. It's now a shelf specimen.

Don't sleep on those agates with vugs or cavities. They take a little care in cleanouts, but they make for some interesting tumbles. I did not fill these with silicone, wax, glue or anything. I had to pry some ceramics out of the larger cavity, then high pressure water and an electric toothbrush.

In a video of a giant super huge crazy lace a guy tumbled he protected areas with hot glue. Not sure how much of a pain it'd be to remove from a hole, but it's a thought.
