Concrete. I opened my vibe after 2 days in 120/220 and that's what I have. Too much water, not enough water, something else?

After a certain point there’s just too much gunk in that first stage. Only fix is a cleanout imo. Usually means the grit is gone anyway.

Concrete. I opened my vibe after 2 days I think Mike is rocking the TV-5. The vibe tumblers work so much faster. Especially on 120 SiC, the rock dust can absorb all the free water and make concrete. I believe it was Drummond Island Rocks who said he likes to start that stage early in the morning so he can check on it after a couple of hours and add water. Looks can be deceiving. I like to pick up some material in my fingers as it runs. If it is “sticky” where the ceramic sticks to 1 spot on the rock, it needs more water. Perfect is a nice film of grit on all the rocks, too wet and the grit would wash off in the bottom. 120 requires at least 2x day checkups. I had a Lot-O load that the small ceramics and small rocks had turned into a mass of concrete at the bottom, From the top every thing looked ok, action was a bit slow, but the big rocks were just staying at the top. Hopefully this helps a bit.

Hopefully this helps a bit. That's exactly how mine was. Looked good on top, a mass on the bottom. Guess I'll have to pay better attention. Thanks Evan.

I use a Thumbler UV-18 and have found that in the first stage the tumble should be checked at least every two hours. The later stages with less grinding don't need such frequent monitoring and the polish stage hardly needs any extra water.

I also have a couple UV-18s, and have put hundreds of pounds of agate through them. Super important to check them frequently, like every few hours, until you have them dialed in and your experience level can guide you. If the rocks stop turning over, then you'll simply grind a hole in the bottom of the tub, and squander some coin. Basically, I look at the bottom of the donut while the rocks are turning over, and make sure there's "a little" standing liquid. Very little, but some. Too much water, the action stops or you're just washing the grit off...too little and the action stops. And use some borax. I put 1/2 cup in my vibes. The borax will take an hour or so to dissolve, so check it and add water as required to get a good grinding action...just a little water...a tablespoon at a time.

Great info here! So, where do you get Borax nowadays? I don't even know what it looks like on a shelf, but my local store (Wal-Mart) has empty shelves in the cleaning supplies aisles.

It comes in a box like powdered detergent, and is probably near the laundry detergent as well. Most non rock tumblers use it as a detergent booster.
