The chart also points to what public health experts have warned could be the biggest risk posed by the coronavirus — that a serious outbreak could overwhelm an already-stretched health care system. The U.S. is dealing with a significant flu season, meaning the breaking line on the chart — the finite capacity of the health care system — is lower than people may think.
"A lot of hospitals already function at capacity, and a high number of flu cases are still being diagnosed in our hospitals, so flattening the curve gives hospitals and public health experts time to plan and prepare," Dionne-Odom said.

That finite capacity recently made an appearance on RTH, and that was absent any corona in town, afaik.

I visited My wife in the hospital tonight and there was some confusion if she was contagious or previous roommate was. I had to where a gown, gloves and facemask, dispose of them before leaving the room and douse my hands with hand sanitizer. After I left, I dropped of a package in the mail box outside the post office and then went to the grocery store to buy a bag of brown rice. I was considering my decontamination procedure after shopping, but it wasn't necessary since the shelves where the rice was located including rice and canned goods were emptied. There isn't a food shortage, just panic buying. I'll try again in a few days after the shelves are restocked.

I know I have enough TP to see me through for awhile, and plenty of canned goods, rice, bread in the freezer, beans, peanut butter and jalapeno jelly, lol, to stay home for a few weeks, maybe more.
But I need to go pick up some Rx meds for my DH. None for me. When we start having supply chain problems with getting people the meds they need on a daily basis, we are in trouble.

I think Amazon Pantry is gonna be raking it in. They also have a new pharmacy.

stardiamond I hope she recovers quickly and without complication. Good news, when she does, she’ll have immunity! No more fear for the two of you

Being discharged today. She seems a little out of it but a hospital can do that to a person. Waiting for the call.

I haven't seen a recent RTH thread on pandemic prep., so this might be timely. I have gathered a few extra things. I live in the countryside but Toronto is not far away. If I don't need some of these supplies because nothing bad happens then I can use them later or take camping when the weather warms up a bit. I don't need water, because I am on a well or can get it from a spring. Heck, I can also catch fish, snare or hunt if it comes to that. You can live on water only for a long while and can survive almost forever with just meat and fat, but I like my carbs and my job #1 is to think ahead and take care of my family. I have already my garden seeds. I will try to keep up with fresh staples (eggs, milk, veggies, etc) as best I can. These will be the first things to run out. My worry is an area lockdown, like we now see in north Italy (where they stop cars from leaving a quarantine area and the store shelves quickly empty). Looks like everybody needs to be self sufficient for at least a month, but 3-6 months is better. If you prepare early, you are helping others by not needing to join them in a panic or fighting over the last can of soup in the store. This is not a bug out situation. I expect power and communications to continue. Here is some of my extra prep (done), in no particular order. I believe the trick is to buy extra of what you normally eat anyway. This list might help somebody with their own list: Cash Big Bag(s) of Rice Dry Pasta Dry mushroom, dry meats , chips, etc Dry beans & peas, various kinds of canned chili beans, canned baked beans , etc Bottles of Pickles. Sauerkraut, kale. Shelf milk (good for 6 months without fridge) Shelf fruit juice Pasta sauce Hot sauce & Spices Protein & oatmeal snack bars Salsa, guacamole & chips Bread in a bag or can that does not need a fridge. Also flat breads (Mexican) cheese Fresh (cool stored), Onions, garlic, potatoes, carrots, apples, squash, turnip, etc. Canned Soup, Dry soup & noodles . Bullion. Olive Oil, sunflower oil Canned Tuna, chicken, sardines, veggies, tomatoes, fruit, condensed milk, etc coffee, tea freezer(s) stacked up with meats, veggies, butter, eggs flour, dry milk & yeast (bread making stuff) crackers oatmeal raisons sugar pancake mix & syrup chocolate granola bars peanut butter & jams mulit vitamines cold meds masks, latex gloves TP Facial Tissue Baby wipes Lady Products cleaning products including bleach, wipes, soaps Hand soap with alcohol for when soap & water not convenient adequate amo. tobacco tooth paste ... and recent dentist visit unread books batteries candles dog food propane Get a flu shot if you don't have one. Won't stop Coronavirus, but you sure don't need both at the same time. Good luck everybody. We will get thru whatever might happen, as long as people generally behave and help their neighbours. This is a well thought out list. The first thing I noticed on your list was cash. With this virus spreading so fast what are your thoughts on this. This is something everybody handles in the coarse of a day. Is it possible the cash is causing the rapid spread of this virus too? They say money is the dirtiest thing you can handle, talk about a portable outhouse. With everyone running to the store with cash how much of the virus it is getting transferred around from your hand to mine with cash and carried around in our pocket for awhile. Then go buy gas now the gas station is passing it along. Just a thought

Yes it is very dirty. I have just read some of John Hopkins as well as the cdc earlier they still don’t have a real answer for why it’s spreading so fast. They also say it takes about 5.1 days once exposed to be infected.
I sent a email to the cdc pointing that fact out and what they thought about disinfecting the money every night in a bank volt with alcohol. But it’s the weekend. Who knows it may well so it down. They are pointing out to sanitize everything else but the money.
