Beginning about April 10 through all of May, we will be taking our new RV west for an adventure. The route will be: Rt 70W out of Pittsburgh to 71 south, picking up 64 west out of Louisville KY. We'll pick up 70W again in St. Louis MO, then heading NW out of Topeka KS to Fort Laramie WY area and then general play around heading into badlands and who knows.
Love rockhounding and fossil hunting. Also cannot pass up ghost towns or anything old and abandoned.
We are also nuts for local historical museums and easier hikes.
Can't wait to hear from y'all! Rob

blindboOne suggestion I have is Keokuk geodes. Can be collected near Keokuk Iowa (north of St Louis). Plenty of info online. I went to Stevenson's geodes I believe - there you dig them out of the hard clay. I also went to another local one (sorry I forget the name of it). On that property you walk the stream & pick them out of the water. A neat experience for sure! Enjoy the trip!

Welcome to the RTH. I hope you have lots of fun on your trip.
I guess you could visit Teepee Canyon, but from what I've read casual hounding isn't usually very productive. Maybe someone on here has been there in recent years and could share some of their experiences.

Hi,
We did a similar trip "out west" from CT. Some highlights of the trip:
Ohio state reformatory - big empty old prison that can be toured, really creepy and cool Hamilton/Keokuk, IL - we hired a day guide for geode hunting, he took us to several places, and we took buckets and buckets home. South Dakota was the best for things to do: Sioux Falls - Park and Lewis and Clark center De Smet, - Laura Ingalls Wilder Philip - Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, tour down in the bunker Rock hunting around Philip - fairborns, agates, jasper, everything really Wall - wall drug store Keystone - Mount Rushmore Badlands national park Custer state park Gold Mining needles highway THE ROCK SHED
We went on to Bozeman, MT Yellowstone national park A lot of places to rock mine near bozeman Little Bighorn Battlefield National monument - heard a great speaker that really brought the whole white man/Indian confrontation to life
It was great, thank you for letting me relive it!!
