Good day everyone, A couple days ago, I bought a Nelson 12 D rock saw. It was really filthy with some prehistoric crud that has started to petrify. I've been cleaning it up and I am impressed with it. This thing is made of cast iron. It's heave but beneath the filth, it is in great condition. The original motor seems to be in really good condition and the rails and rollers are in great shape too. here's a few pictures Right side by Glen Ray, on Flickr Left side by Glen Ray, on Flickr Original motor runs by Glen Ray, on Flickr Tag by Glen Ray, on Flickr Pretty grimey by Glen Ray, on Flickr

I had one early in my lapidary formative years. Yes its heavy. That cast iron is vulnerable to breakage so watch how you tighten or bang on it. If I recall correctly there was no threaded lateral feed on the vice. It was a move and lock in place situation. Mine went to a friend who managed to break a critical piece of the vice and who relegated it to a shelf and death by neglect. Enjoy it; it represents a by-gone era of machinery.

A soda blaster would be in order it seems. I had 2 at different times, one with no vice.

I've got #205, cast iron, and #595, aluminum. Right now life has me in a place taking care of my wife I can't get them up and running, hopefully later this year. The iron one looks to be in about the same shape as yours, aluminum one needed nothing but a new switch.

It sounds like we have the basis for a Nelson Owners club. Who shall we put in charge of designing the license plate frames and golf shirts?

Not me, I only do plain license frames and don't play golf or wear t-shirts w/logo on them. I put my response up so maybe some information sharing could be done, if necessary.

I decided I have too many projects. I pressure washed this saw and sold it to "Dave". Dave is new to Lapidary and was excited to have this project. He has done a great job restoring it! He got a great deal and I got a great deal, an old saw has been saved and I don't have it on my project list! WIN WIN WIN! Nelson by Glen Ray, on Flickr

WOW . . . Epic transformation!
I think we need a movie of that puppy in action.

Man, that looks like new, fine job. I can provide a sketch of the original splash shield on the saw guard if desired.

I run my slabs a little extra longer so as to wear down at least half the nubs from slabbing.
