Found this 33 lb rock in the local river hills today and I think (hope) it's petwood. Anybody agree or disagree? Rock is wet in the photos. I found a 72 lb petwood rock last summer and I cut some of it off for tumbling...some of it is almost done stage one and it's looking real interesting so I'm anxious to see how it turns out after final polish. Winter disappeared enough to allow my first hounding of the year today and petwood was the target so was pleased to find this guy... A photo of the end grain would be helpful. Thanks.

A photo of the end grain would be helpful. Thanks. I am not sure it's petrified wood, the grain on the end does not look quite right. As Beth said a closer picture of the end grain would help.

Looks like a neat lined granite type rock.

Not sure it's pet wood. Maybe woodman can help?

Cool rock - but it does look more like layers than growth rings.

Here's the end grain as requested (wet and dry). hummingbirdstones2 (type that 5 times!) your layers vs rings comment cleared it up for me and I'll be more confident ID'ing future petwood finds so thanks! MY rookie eyes see nothing indicating rings so unless it's from the world's biggest tree I'm agreeing now that it's not petwood. I'm still going to tumble a piece and see what happens. Thank you all for responding...RTH rocks! (did I actually say that) IMG_5422 by braat33, on Flickr IMG_5421 by braat33, on Flickr

based on these photos I would say it is NOT wood but it should tumble up great!

Thanks. That was just my guess based on the way the lines appear to keep the same orientation as they wrap around the ends of the chunk.

Appears to be gneiss.
