That’s some awesome stuff. I might have to jump in and sign up. Go for it. I am not really happy with them though. Any of the ones with good color are really small. All of the decent size rocks are brown. Just hit or miss depending on what handful they toss in the box I am sure. The little test I just did show how easy it will be to get a polish so the contest will come down to who got the best rocks in there box. Chuck

Nobody wants to sell me hand selected stuff, they think I will cheat in the contest. I would never do such a thing!!!!

Those look really good. Really, really good. But to save myself from being tempted I will wait until the contest is finished to purchase lol

Chuck, that's an interesting experiment. Agreed, the shaping is not to my liking either, but you can't argue with the shine. I'm convinced the Lot-O can put a shine on (almost) anything.

When I first started tumbling some 25 years ago, I followed the instructions from Lortone. I ended up expanding the coarse stage to 2 weeks, but the other stages were completed at one week a piece. Rocks were not totally smoothed.
We were able to get shiny rocks, but I've since gotten much pickier to allow the coarse stage to do all of the work/smoothing.
At the end of the run, rocks were shiny, but they were no where near what I dialed in after the fact. And that was just with a rotary.
So, yes, rocks can get shiny with manufacturer instructions, but the short run in the coarse stage will have a definite impact in the finished product.

Thanks for sharing your experiment. I intend to do some prelim shaping on wheels. Then rotary, then finish in Loto.

"Rocks after 2 weeks of 46/70 in the lortone rotary" They say to use 46/70? Very nice shine!

"Rocks after 2 weeks of 46/70 in the lortone rotary" They say to use 46/70? Very nice shine! I do not think 46/70 vs 60/90 in a two week span would make a hill of beans difference in the end result shown. I would be willing to bet I could achieve the same shine without any rotary time. Nowhere in the instructions does it say that the end result will be perfectly smooth flawless gems. In fact the lortone instruction book I have says multiple runs in stage one may be required to smooth the rocks. Like I said before this is not the look I am after but sure enough my wife seen these and said she liked them. Chuck

Just sent in my $ and my rocks are on their way here. I have been feeling pretty low, so i'm glad you posted this. Otherwise i probably would have been discouraged from the raw material. I like shiny brown.

I like shiny brown. You’re not the only one, this is a different spring than we have all experienced. Let’s keep it hopeful as we can.

I've got a whole stack of 'wrong' right now, besides the obvious... my car won't pass the next inspection, still looks good, runs good, but frame is rusting out (man, I love my car, too)and I had resigned myself to (used) car shopping... and now I can't go do that. Good news is, I'm still on the payroll for work... bad news is, I'm pretty sure I won't have a job to go back to once this is over. If I'm lucky, I'll have an offer of a similar job, but get to drive an extra 60 miles per day and have a horrible schedule. To top everything off, I hurt my ankle by -- get this -- standing up wrong. At least if I fell in a hole or something I could understand it and it wouldn't sound so stupid! It's going on 3 weeks now and it still hurts a ridiculous amount if forget and try to raise the front of my foot. I ought to have a doctor I suppose and physical therapy but who the heck wants to go to the doctor for anything non-life-threatening right now?
And I'm supposed to be a trip right now, collecting fossils and going to historic sites... there's a laugh! Also, the Gem and Mineral Club I'm a member of has cancelled their summer show and sale... I've missed, I think, one, in the past 25 or 30 years.
The list just goes on and on, but the worst is this... I'm so wracked with anxiety that I haven't accomplished anything! (I was struggling with anxiety and depression BEFORE COVID-19... yeah, not getting better, as you can imagine.) All this time, and what do I have to show for it???
Even signing up for the rock-tumbling competition has increased my anxiety. I haven't tried my tumbler since the ladder fell on it. It just seems like too much to even try.

Got my rocks in the mail just now. Now I wave a magic wand and -- hmm, guess not. Tomorrow I will bring up the tumblers. Still in the 20s at night here. A little bit overwhelmed right now.
