Here's the beginning of the fourth round! Week 0: 1527g - Going into 36 SiC. This is getting back up there towards the scale of the 1655g quartz I did. This could be good! It has these little guys on it that are kind of cool... but uh... they'll be going bye bye... So appreciate them now! Really need to peel off this outer layer! Really want to get a look at the green in this. knave 's auction box came in, loaded with beautiful amethyst! Is that not the prettiest damn thing? They may be a little big, but this is week 1 rough grinding, so it's cool. I'll be pulling them out, finishing them in the smaller barrels as they're ready. This is going to get -(i) 2

Excellent. I've got a large moss agate rolling as well.

I haven't found what the best side of this rock is yet, so, all the sides! Week 1: 36 SiC. 1466g. Running total mass loss: 4.0% Decimating knave 's amethyst! Grind, baby, grind!

Spanking it with SiC 36 and the purple attack. Can't wait to see what lurks behind the crust.

Love these pictorials. Always organized. Same format. Weighed in grams. You know branding, Ben! Great job. I love how the crazy lace is coming along.

I find watching these big rocks being uncovered bit by bit extremely interesting. I also am looking forward to seeing what lurks under that skin.

Pretty green tube moss! Reminds me of old-timey Medfordite agate.

It’s getting there. Really interested to see how those amethyst turn out. I have no luck with them. They always chip, fracture or undercut constantly.

I've been pulling the amethyst out that I've deemed ready to go forward. It is a chippy material and trying to smooth out one chip leads to finding another chip the next week. That seems to be the case no matter the source of amethyst I've tried. Quartz may be hard, but is not particularly tough. Though on occasion I find chunks that laugh at me when I try to break them down with the sledge.
So some of what I've pulled have very shallow surface chips that I'm contemplating how I'll handle. The big rock is too hard on them to continue them in coarse in the same barrel. The ones I've set aside that is, there's still no substitute to initial shapping with a big rock. I may do a 60/90 run with them in the 3lb barrels with extra cushioning.
The one thing I see the most with all the quartz is what I believe is called spalling? It's like a crack that's somewhat parallel to the surface that as you grind down kind of looks like a thin fingernail. Sometimes those never smooth out and just become a feature.

Thanks for the above post. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who has problems with it. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong. Yet I still try.
