Our last pickle pot is no more. I’ve been buying mini hot pots from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. About $10 -$15 each.
We’ve never had an official pickle pot. I’d like your opinion on the official pickle pots. Do they last longer, or better in some other way?
Thanks. Pat

It has always been the little fondue (?) crock pots for us, all from estate sales or garage sales. If we contaminate one we just toss it and get another off the shelf.

Never used a "real" pickle pot. Over priced and probably don't work any better.
I've been using a mini Crockpot (it's 1.5 qts. I think) for over 15 years now. The same one. Granted, I don't use it every day, but it has not died on me in all that time and it's still going. If it did die, I'd buy another one and I'd probably die before it did.

Sorry can't help about the official ones...but the little mini-crock is still working well after a decade and the price was right. I, too, would like to hear from someone using something a professional version. knave -- used for cleaning metal after soldering

Peter Piper picked a peck of pro pickle pots; A peck of pro pickle pots Peter Piper picked; If Peter Piper picked a peck of pro pickle pots, Where's the peck of pro pickled pots Peter Piper picked?
My only advice is to get something small. Counter/bench space is always hard to find, and I could easily pickle simultaneously 10-15 pieces in my little dinky pot.

I love my mini crock pot and agree that the "real" ones are way overpriced and probably wouldn't work any better

Looks like another mini crock pot for us. Big difference in price. Ours have all been small. I put a tuna/cat food strainer in it to make it easy to retrieve flat pieces. Also add a few clean rocks so the item won’t be flat in the strainer. I’m glad to hear I’m on the right track.

Just make sure the pot has the removable ceramic insert. Makes it a dream to clean.

Pat I always figured that official pickle pots were lined with glass to prevent the heated pickle solution from dissolving molecules of whatever from a less impervious lining and affecting the finish of the piece being pickled. If you've always used hot pots, you'd probably have noticed a negative impact to your pieces by now. I've had my pickler (from Fretz, I think) for 10+ years and never had an issue with it. I like the idea of having a bigger pot for larger pieces.

I just called Rio Grande to ask them what was the difference between the little crock pot style and the Grobet Pickle Pot they offer.
From their website/catalog, I got this information: Grobet holds 12 ounces, size 5.75" high, and 5" diameter temp is 140 degrees F $135 Rio on the phone adds that it has a removable insert, and a good brand name, made for jewelry
Mini crock pot hold 16 ounces, size 2.25" high, and 4.25" diameter temp is 140 degrees F $19.95 Rio on phone says no removable insert, not made for jewelry
So --- mini crock pot is smaller, yet holds more liquid. I could buy six of them for the price of one Grobet. I'm still looking.

wpotterw. Is that the pot you use? So far, the biggest items we pickle are cuff bracelets 2” by 6” . Don’t fit in my little 16 ounce pot. Need to turn them over. The 1.5 quart (48 oz) could pickle several at once. Is the pot removable? Thanks.

I'm getting one as soon as we move and I set up my shop again.

Just make sure the pot has the removable ceramic insert. Makes it a dream to clean. Wait, you clean your pickle pot? I never clean mine unless I need to make new pickle which happens about once every 10 years or so.
The only reason I can think of to actually have to clean it is if you contaminate the pickle.

If you're doing larger pieces like bangles, it will certainly make it easier for you. I just can't see spending big bucks for something that is essentially a crock pot. The professional jewelers I know all use some type of crock pot and they didn't buy them from a jewelry supplier.
